Upcoming NYC artists playing CMJ: Alyson Greenfield

Posted on:

Who would’ve thought in 2008, when aspiring musician named Alyson Greenfield released her debut CD, Jewel-esque ‘Tuscaloosa’, that in 2 years she’ ll evolve into full-speed ambitious business woman with her own music festival and a unique take on music, which mixes electronics, pop, folk and even rap (there are a lot of things Alyson can do with her voice). It seems that she fuses music styles as easily as she makes jokes between the songs during her countless gigs all over New York. On September, 26 Alyson kicked-off her all-female festival ‘Tinderbox’ and while working on British and French versions of the festival she somehow finds time to constantly come up with fresh material, which includes collaboration with beatboxers, glockenspiel covers and songs about… giving birth to the keyboards? Check this lady out at this year’ s CMJ Music Marathon on October, 22 at Spike Hill (Beyond Race Magazine Showcase) and 23 at Bar Marchless (TJO Presents). – Mikhael Agafonov

Julian Shah-Tayler’s upcoming solo album

Posted on:

Julian Shah-Tayler is no stranger to writing and producing pop music. His career has lent itself to collaborations with Joaquin Phoenix, Siobhan Fahey (Bananarama), Kerli, and Whitey to name just a few. You may have even seen him DJing sets at the Standard Hotel here in town. With a schedule like his, it’s a wonder that he even has time for a solo career. Well he does and his first proper release, Coito Ergo Sum, is due later this year.

Shah-Tayler’s solo material falls somewhere in-between rock and new wave with synth and drum machine feeling just as cozy on the recording as his guitar work. The Deli was passed along a copy of the upcoming album to take a listen to, and there is definately some stand out work. The track "Wetter" is reminiscent of the tongue-in-cheek sexual lyrics made famous by Prince and recently resurrected by bands like She Wants Revenge. "Beautiful World" and "Roman Tower" are two delicate tracks that throws in a hint of piano ballad into the album. Things pick up with the driving rhythm and slightly more industrial feel of "Say What You Want", but Shah-Tayler doesn’t stray too far from his 80’s influences by sticking in some brass samples in as well.

If you’re trying to lure your friends to the dark side that is indie music, or maybe you’re trying to fill a spot in your collection next to David Bowie’s work from the 80s, then Julian Shah-Tayler is accessible, intelligent, and skilled. You’ll have to wait a bit longer for Coito Ergo Sum, but his two previous EPs, Un Ange Passe and Blah Blah Blahnik, are available on BandCamp.com for free download or donation.

The CMJ Music Marathon is getting closer!

Posted on:

It’s that time of year everyone — no not Halloween — but New York’s annual CMJ Music Marathon, held over Oct. 19-23. You’ve seen some posts about it, but what does that have to do with us here in Los Angeles? This 30 year old festival shines a light on some of the hottest signed and unsigned talent around, including some of our home town favorites, ’cause LA has got to represent!

So who is going to be there? Folk duo The Chapin Sisters, the synth driven acts Superhumanoids and Kisses, dance party patrons Casxio, indie songsters Lady Danville, soloist Evan Voytas, and the soulful Stone Darling. If that wasn’t enough, Deli favorites Loomis & The Lust, Young the Giant, and Vanaprasta will be rocking throughout the CMJ Music Marathon.

Speaking of New York, I know we’re all about local music, but there is one band that has the whole Deli network buzzing and I can’t let good music go unnoticed. The clock nears towards New York’s Atlantic/Pacific‘s debut album, Meet Your New Love, out Oct. 26th thanks to a recent deal with our friends here in LA, No Sleep Records. The band’s music is expertly layered, with brushed drums, light bass, keys, and folk guitar work drawing you in before their delicate and sincere vocals can deliver the final blow. Two tracks from Meet Your New Love, "Patterns" and "Some Weary Valentine", can be spotted on the band’s MySpace page. Take a mental trip to the Big Apple for a few moments and enjoy these tunes.

Free Live Recording w/Cowmuddy at The Fire Oct. 17

Posted on:

You may or may not know it, but Cowmuddy (a.k.a. Michael McShane) is a bit of a local legend on the singer-songwriter scene. The eccentric, environmentally conscious McShane probably would be an interesting subject for a documentary. I imagine him becoming one of those artists who’d gain more popularity and resurgence after its release and he had fallen off the radar like an Anton Newcombe or Daniel Johnston. You know that there must be something special there for him to attract help from a rotating cast of talented hometown musicians that have included Jonas Osterle (formerly of The Teeth, Flashy Python, Purples, Paper Masques) Amos Lee, “Steady” Freddie Berman (Amos Lee), Jaron Olevsky (Amos Lee), Todd Erk (Birdie Busch, Hoots & Hellmouth) and many, many more. He’ll be recording a live performance tonight at his second home, The Fire, for a new CD, and it’s FREE. Also on the bill are The Deli favorites, Levee Drivers, with their slow-burning, bluesy country rock. I know. But the Phillies game! Hopefully they’ll have it on like every music venue with a TV should these days. (Come on KFN – breakdown and play the games. It’d just make everyone happier. Hehe…is it really necessary to run that Bad Brains video again? :o) The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 9pm, FREE, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Big Art Show Halloween Spooktacular at Pterodactyl Oct. 16

Posted on:

There’s nothing I love more than All Hallows’ Eve, rad music and even radder art (also on that list: instituting a false lexis). And the Big Art Show Halloween Spooktacular exhibit at Pterodactyl tonight is like an idiosyncratic flare-up of all three. Well, OK, it’s not on Halloween, but the minds behind the Kensington space did so cleverly allude to the sacred day in the show’s title, and that’s good enough for me. Still, designations are trivial when compared to the local rhythms that’ll vibrate threw your body while trolling the loft gallery – the blithesome folk of The Great Unknown’s alt-Americana missives, the incisive disquiet of Lion Versus’ alt-folk allegories, and the spectral jowls of A Stick and A Stone’s esoteric chronicles, plus the bemoaned strings and pining plucks of Baltimore’s indie-folk squad, A Cat Called Cricket. Pterodactyl, 3237 Amber St., Floor 5, 8pm, $5 suggested donation, All Ages – Annamarya Scaccia

(The Sounds of) Kaleidoscope at KFN Oct. 16

Posted on:

(The Sounds of) Kaleidoscope plays exactly what their name suggests: a mottled cul-de-sac of cinereal garage rock, angsty power pop and dawdling psychedelic rock. And it’s not a metaphor pulled out of vivid thin air – the hometown quartet’s 2009 album¸ All This Heaven, plays out like a mollified light display reflecting the sonic reverberations of a thousand tiny mirror shards. Couple this with the auricular time-traveling of local garage-psych lo-fiers Far-Out Fangtooth, who released their self-titled 7-inch last month on Ian Records, and Australia’s psych-rock pushers The Lovetones, and you’ll find yourself sipping one hell of a cocktail, which, by the way, is served best with a side of Mary and an entrée of Jane. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St, 7:30pm, $8, 21+ – Annamarya Scaccia

The 2nd Annual Bloktoberfest Oct. 16

Posted on:

Even though it happened on a rain-soaked day, last year’s inaugural Bloktoberfest managed to be the perfect marriage of community spirit, delicious food from Philly’s best food trucks, all kinds of epic beer varieties, and a nice lineup of music that included Adam Arcuragi and The Love Language. But in honor of its second coming, one of the city’s larger block parties has outdone themselves. The beer lineup will feature favorites from Dock Street, Weyerbacher, and Ommegang, and the food truck lineup has become twice as large to feature the likes of Honest Tom’s Taco Truck, The Dapper Dog, and Koja. But this also marks the first time that the festival will be bringing in 2 stages of music, and it will features bands like London’s Allo Darlin’, the horn-tastic Budos Band, and a bunch of up-and-coming locals. Since a busy schedule that involved signing to Merge Records, releasing an ambitious sophomore LP titled Libraries, and embarking on national tours with Camera Obscura and Local Natives prevented The Love Language from playing another local show last year, the fest decided to take matters into their own hands and invite them back as a headliner. Joining them will be Cozy Galaxies (formerly The Major Leagues) whose Americana rock echoes the likes of Wilco and Pavement as well as Strange Engineers, Giant Mind, Fishtown Jazz Odyssey and New Pony. Blocktoberfest, 20th and Christian St., 12 – 8pm, Free, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, October 15 – 17

Posted on:

Sorry folks, we’re taking a break today for the first time in a long time to prepare for the festivities this evening. By now, you should already know that tonight is our Anniversary Party at Johnny Brenda’s, and we wanted to thank everyone for all the kind words and support that we’ve received since we’ve joined the Philly music community. It’s been a wonderful time watching it prosper, flourish and come together in a way that we’ve never seen it happen before here. The most exciting thing is that we truly believe this is only just the beginning. It constantly amazes us all the interesting new artists that we discover everyday, and we look forward to the many more who will join us because let’s face it. Philly rocks! And tonight we are going to prove why that statement is true with are special guests The Extraordinaires, An American Chinese and Power Animal! Yes, our staff kind of creamed a little when we confirmed this bill, and we are happy to finally share it with you this evening. You’ll also be treated to sweet tunes spun by DJ Jersey Dan and visual art provided by Meredith Edlow as well as FREE mags, pins and Meredith’s & Frannie’s tasty homemade oatmeal chocolate chip “crack cookies”. Boy King Islands on Plustapes

Posted on:

The local cassette only label Plustapes released their latest title this week in the form of the debut album from Boy King Islands, Fall. The duo of Zachary Mastoon and Jason Hunt have been together since the winter of 2003. Musically, Boy King Islands is lo-fi basement rock in its purest form, and their sound lends itself to the cassette format.

Fallis being released in a limited edition of 200 with digital download.

Jail Weddings at the Bootleg and Alexs Bar

Posted on:

Jail Weddings by Lauren Everett

Jail Weddings, one of bands worthy of your votes in this month’s poll, is gearing up for the release of Love is Lawless by playing their release party at the Bootleg Theater Oct. 22nd and following up with Alex’s Bar in Long Beach Oct. 28th.

This 10 piece powerhouse sounds like the sweet lovechild born from a night of passion betwee a Vegas lounge lizard and a 60s girls group do-wopper. Phil Spector’s wall of sound philosophy rings true through their sneak peek track "I Thought You Were Someone I Knew" with up-stroked guitars, xylophone, piano, and fiddle crafting their vintage pop sound. You can grab the track for free from the band’s website.

Along with their Bootleg Theater show, Jail Weddings will be having a listening party at Origami Vinyl the preceeding night, Oct. 21st. The album, Love is Lawless, will be officially available on Oct. 26th.
