Benny Marchant to release upcoming solo EP, ‘Conversations Missed’

Posted on:

Singer/songwriter Benny Marchant

From Maryland to Nashville and now more recently Los Angeles, singer/songwriter Benny Marchant has dwelled and built his repertoire all across the U.S., leading up to the release of his debut solo EP next Tuesday, September 28. The Conversations Missed EP will be released through his own imprint, Marina Records.

As the lead singer of LA alternative band The Kings Royal, Marchant used more of a garage rock influence comparable to the Strokes and Brit-rock sound similar to Oasis, but with his solo music he shows a softer side. The four-tracks on the EP, which was produced by Joe Chiccarelli (Radiohead, White Stripes) tend to be clean-cut with a strong reflective mood. The vocals are comforting like sitting by the fire during a frosty East Coast winter. Nashville’s influence peaks its head with the twang of a pedal steel guitar on "Been Too Long".

The title track, "Conversations Missed" is another heartfelt track, but the melody is a little more breezy than the others. The video directed by Alan Tanner draws on the idea of ‘light’ from the song’s lyrics with a charming result.

Marchant will follow with his full-length album, Cold Weather early next year.

Live Reviews: Tab The Band opening for Slash at Terminal 5

Posted on:

Tuesday, September 14 was a guitar-centric evening at New York’s Terminal 5. For one, Slash was headlining the sold out show, and yes, some Guns’n’Roses tracks were performed! Hand selected openers and emerging act, TAB the Band, held their own against the blessed-by-fame dude, as they filled the 3,000-person capacity venue with raucous rock tracks, biting guitar riffs, and an air of humor. TAB jumped into high gear with “The House of El Ron” and barely took breaks as they pressed on with songs from their January release, “Zoo Noises:” “Bought and Sold,” “Run Away,” “She Said No (I Love You),” and “Lookin’ Pretty, Pretty,” which was featured on HBO’s “Entourage.” “Sticky Wickets “Little Water,” and “Heavy Idea,” the “oldies,” drew in the crowd, amping them up for the two-plus hour Slash extravaganza. www.TABtheBand.com – Meijin Bruttomesso

Homegrown Live: Hollywood Gossip, The Bubbles, Sleep Good

Posted on:

The 101X Homegrown Live series offers another installment tomorrow (9/24) at the Beauty Bar, featuring Hollywood Gossip, The Bubbles, and Sleep Good. The Bubbles – pictured above – haven’t received much of our digital ink, so let’s give them a little: Their LP Daydreaming in Technicolor came out this past August 19th to tremendous waves of acclaim ("A heavenly blast from the skies of psychedelic pop" sez the Austinist) and in addition to Homegrown on Friday they’ve got an upcoming at Beerland Oct. 13th. Oh and hey we like ’em too.

The Art of Shooting plays Rockwood on 10.07+ announce CMJ show

Posted on:

The Art of Shooting’s music presents the question: The lady or the tiger? The quartet’s melodramatic indie rock swings through a pendulum of extreme moods. Kelly Irene Corson’s voice can be deceptively sweet in one instance and then become rough in the next with the rest of the band following suit. This is most evident in “The Birdcage,” which volleys through this juxtaposition with ease. The band evokes comparisons to Rainer Maria and Bettie Serveert for their strong female frontwomen that can play both the lady and the tiger cards without batting a lash. It will be interesting to see this eminently electric band play an intimate (acoustic?) set at Rockwood Music Hall on 10.07. You can also catch them at CMJ on 10.19 at The Alphabet Lounge. – Nancy Chow

Pearl and the Beard CD release at The Living Room on 09.24

Posted on:

Family Records’ Pearl and the Beard are back with a new EP. This charming trio (featured in The Deli’s Best of NYC 2009 year End Poll) plays folk pop enriched by spotless male-female 3 part harmonies and cello parts. Now when we say "spotless" we mean that these guys can really sing and perfectly harmonize with each other, which is like a rare blessing – yeah because that’s how angels sing, right? You can witness this in this live video they recorded to promote the CD. You can also stream their album here. Don’t miss the CD release party at The Living Room on 09.24!

Waterstreet’s Of Gossip

Posted on:

I was recently sent the latest ep from Waterstreet called Of Gossip. The band released it on July 31st and recorded it here at Kilo Recording Studio. I don’t know if it was the band’s name or their pictures on myspace, but I was excepting something a little more subdued. What surprised me was mainly the force of Evan Hand’s guitar playing and the range and polish of his vocals.

"Psycho" is the first the single from the ep and it finds Hand performing like a cross between Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother) and Jimi Hendrix. However, my favorite part of the ep comes in the very first track "Nobody’s Ground" when you hear what sounds like tortured piano announce itself over the band’s fierce noise. Another highlight is the five-song ep’s final track "12" with it’s sing-along melodies and youthful imagery. Of Gossip is fine ep from a promising young band.

Aloud’s “Exile” CD Release Tomorrow at Church

Posted on:

Aloud has always written music that, at first listen, seems like it would translate easily to the stage.  Until now.  "Exile," the band’s new LP, is dark and densely orchestrated.  Acoustic piano and horns cast deep overtones over the traditional rock instruments and lend the songs a weight altogether new to the band.  The songs are, for the most part, a good bit slower, too.  That’s not to say that this album is hard to swallow.  Tracks like "Counterfeit Star" and "A Light That Shines" bounce along at a danceable clip, and in the slower songs, Aloud’s memorable melodies have more room to stretch out.  In fact, one of the most effective songs the band has written to date, "Exile in the Night," is the perfect combination – the chorus melody is a beautiful, lilting duet between Jen de la Osa and a high register piano over a groovy rhythm propelled by a guiro.  This album doesn’t sound like an especially easy transition to live performance for the band, which might be for the better.  If this much of a departure in the studio produced such a rich and interesting result, their always-electric live performance will be all the more memorable given the new material.

Catch Aloud live before they leave for tour!  The release show is at Club Church and is hosted by author and poet James Caroline, and the supporting bands are St. Claire and Old Jack.

Phil “Philthy” Lassiter plays Googie’s Lounge on 09.25

Posted on:

Interesting and unconventional bill Saturday night at Googie’s Lounge (above The Living Room). Performing will be multi-instrumentalist, Phil “Philthy” Lassiter (pictured), whose blend of soul, R&B, funk, and everything else has earned him the description “the lovechild of Andre 3000 and Aretha Franklin, with James Brown laying down the blessing.” Lassiter has been primarily recognized as one of the premier horn section arrangers in the music business — (he even scooped up 3 Grammy Awards from his work with a number of different multi-platinum artists like Timbaland, Regina Belle, and Kirk Franklin) — and it wasn’t until recently that Lassiter moved to New York from Nashville, TN and began playing his solo material, so his performance is highly anticipated. The sounds of Dominic Sinesio are equally as varied, drawing from classic 70’s rock, jazz, and soul, a la Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder, to overtones of 80’s-era Sting. Opening for the two New York-based artists will be talented Nashville singer/songwriter (and Deli Nashville Editor) Erin Manning, with her rather unique vaudeville-meets-rock style.

FYI on DIYs in PHL: Philadelphia Film and Music Festival

Posted on:

Tomorrow is the start of the Philadelphia Film and Music Festival so for four days you have a chance to see plenty of live music and films as well as be part of something that our local community deserves: our own festival. We had a chance to catch up with partners in crime Joe Lekkas (Village Green Productions) and Doug Sakmann (Backseat Conceptions) about their seemingly herculean task to unite Philly for four days of music, movies and good times. You can check out what they had to say here!

Nightlands Signs to Secretly Canadian!

Posted on:

Congrats to Nightlands, multi-instrumentalist David Hartley’s ProTools solo project, who just signed to Secretly Canadian! You may best know him as the bassist for The War on Drugs or possibly from his work with BC Camplight, Buried BedsAdam Acuragi and/or Pepper’s Ghost, but it is always nice to see a talented dude get some of his own recognition. Secretly Canadian will officially release the 12” for Forget the Mantra on November 9. However, you can still purchase it here via Bandcamp. – The Deli Staff
