New York City band Lucinda Black Bear (whose leader C. Gibbs will be remembered by us for playing the very first Deli Mag fundraiser at Asterisk in the Fall of 2004) will release KNIVES, the second full-length CD of what NPR Music calls their "carefully written folk rock with stunning sonic arrangements" on Tuesday, November 2nd. To mark the occasion, the band will play three New York-area shows throughout the fall: 92nd Street Y Tribeca on November 5th, Maxwell’s on November 11th and Rockwood Music Hall on December 9th. Dead Till Tuesday CD release party at Public Assembly on 10.06

Posted on:

Dead Till Tuesday, recently winner of the "Citymeals" Battle of The Band (a fundraising event involving a competition between emerging artists), is celebrating the release of their new EP "What’s That Sound?" with a show at Public Assembly on October 6. The band is the brainchild of Joe Pepitone (although it performs live as a trio), and produces rather chilled electronic pop with big choruses somewhat reminiscent the melodic electronic scene of the 80s (think a slightly darker and mellower version of Erasure). The EP was actually produced by Mark Saunders, who worked with Erasure, The Cure and Depeche Mode among others. There will be an open bar at the show from 8 to 9 pm – we know you want to know that!

Sir Charles Latham Releases Single & Donates Sales to Save Our Planet!

Posted on:

One of our favorite local anti-folk heroes and self-deprecating social commentators, Sir Charles Latham (formerly Death Panel), just released a single by his new project Charles Latham and the Prospectors called “Oil!”, which whimsically spews some of his thoughts about the recent BP disaster. Here’s a message from Sir Latham himself: “For any of the MP3s I sell, 100% of the proceeds go to Global Green USA. I’m like fucking Bono over here.” Help save our planet and get some music from a witty, talented dude! Sounds like a win-win situation to us. FREE American Rock History Lesson at KFN Sept. 29

Posted on:

If your wallet’s as empty as mine, you monopolize the opportunity to acquire free things. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE MOMENTS! A free concert! Even better, it’s not some family band playing at the local church, but our favorite urban cowboys, Levee Drivers, bringing you down-home thigh-slappin’ rock ‘n roll cut with deep blues soul. They’re looking to amp your Wednesday evening past Saturday night status and into the stratosphere of their idols, Bruce, Johnny, and Hank. Joining them will be fellow Bucks County natives, The Lawsuits, and Machine Gun Joe. Like Levee Drivers, these bands’ write songs that echo some of our country’s rich rock history. So, if you don’t go, you hate America… just kidding… Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, FREE, 21+ – Katie Bennett

Review: Hosannas’ “Together”

Posted on:

First off, who doesn’t like choral saturated harmonies? "Hoping That You Will," the opening track on Hosannas‘ new release Together, starts off with mostly vocals cycling though a reverberated chant and an organ-synth backing the harmonies. That alone is an effective way to rope you in, but then the next layer drops you onto the sand of a futuristic spaghetti western, all tremolo picking and layers of fuzz with a western vibe. The result is refreshing.

The content on Together – the sophomore effort from the remaining members of the band following a summertime departure of half the group – is honest and the more I listen, the catchier it gets. There is a good balance of light and dark tones, and the album works as a thematic procession through this kind of surf-rock, synth-pop, western city of lights and rhythm vibe. It sounds like a stage full of people are making this music; the album has a big sound that is unique in its composition and provides a great balance of elements. I would be happiest riding my bike to this music, or maybe just walking around contemplating my imminent death – in a good way.

The album has good motion and I like the space-y vibe. When you can put digi-pop together with rock ‘n’ roll, you have something unique.

Together isn’t officially released until November 9, but Hosannas is treating Portlanders to a much earlier CD Release show on Sunday, October 3

Catch the album release at Mississippi Studios with Aan, and Dana Buoy (of Akron/Family).

Dynasty Electric releases song featuring YYYs Brian Chase

Posted on:

"Electric Love" is the new single from Brooklyn band Dynasty Electric featuring special guest Brian Chase of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs on drums. Catchy, high-energy, and with a punky edge, the song perfectly encapsulates Dynasty Electric, a Brooklyn duo who have patiently perfected their electro-rock sound through years of experimentation in the studio and stages throughout the world. Featuring Jenny Electrik’s sexy lead vocal, the song was originally written whilst producer/saxophonist Seth Misterka and YYY’s drummer Brian Chase were on a duo tour in Australia. Check it out here. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

Adam H. Stephens: Living on Cliffs, Singing to Tell the Tales

Posted on:

“Oh no this living ain’t for the faint of heart, oh no this living is just a dying art” sings Adam H. Stephens in his new song “With Vengeance Come”.  Stephens’s solo album We Live on Cliffs (Saddle Creek Records) hits stores today (September 28th).

The nine tracks on the album range from the hushed beauty of the aforementioned song, to the catchy get-up-and dance (“Praises in Your Name”), to a song Stephens calls a “punk-jam” (“Second Mind”). Fans of his band Two Gallants will notice quite a shift from the bare-bone guitar, drums and voice combination that comprises the band’s brilliant songs. Stephens explores more musical complexity on this release, and coupled with his characteristically raw lyrics, the songs have something for everyone. The scratchy and powerful voice he employs for his songs with Tyson Vogel in Two Gallants is now replaced by a smoother, but every bit as effective, vocal pitch. Although it may seem he has stepped out of the character that he created for his tales of crime, loss and love in Two Gallants, Stephens does not feel that his current work is a different medium of expression for him. “My songwriting style was particular for the time. I’d like to think I’ve grown up and changed. Even if those lyrics were personal, as I am still growing my songwriting reflects that.”

I’m Turning Into plays Don Pedro on 10.01 and Deli CMJ party on 10.23

Posted on:

The ambiguously (and excellently) named I’m Turning Into play angular post-punk that’s rife with catchy melody and little quirks. The band has discovered a way to merge jagged guitar riffs and up-beat, playful rhythms with infectious vocal hooks. The song “I’m Going” stands out as perfect example, opening with cutting-yet-melodic guitar lines before exploding into a chorus that you can only imagine a room full of sweaty, dedicated fans singing along to. There’s a bit of that sloppy 90’s indie sound in there too—sort of like the Archers of Loaf meeting Devo or even the Dickies. The band also has a penchant for playing around with rhythm and noise; the 12-minute song “Don Keehotay” is a cacophonous—yet glorious—mess of scattered drums, weird psych harmonies and feedback-laden guitar. Basically, I’m Turning Into have taken the best parts of indie, punk, and post-punk, added their own idiosyncrasies, and created some amazing tunes. Don’t miss their Deli CMJ party at Spike Hill on Saturday 10.23 with tons of great indie bands! Full schedule here. – Bill Dvorak

Bing and Ruth CD release at le Poisson Rouge on 09.28

Posted on:

Bing and Ruth play mellow instrumental music that can be described as a blend of ambient, classical, orchestral and pop. Tonight (09.28) the full 11 member formation is going to celebrate the release of the band’s 3rd CD with a show at Le Poisson Rouge , available digitally and as a double LP – as a side note we just realized that when releases will be digital only (because that’s going to happen of course) double albums will disappear! They will be just very long digital releases… Anyway, for the many stressed out New Yorkers out there, this show might actually have a therapeutic, calming and meditation inducing effect. it’s October, we may all need it.
