Album Review: Strength, “Mind-Reader”

Posted on:

It’s been four years since Strength made Portland all hot and bothered with its self-released, sex-saturated debut, Going Strong. The album was a swanky collection of love jams with titles of the like of, “Burning up for Two,” and, “Press Up,” crooned by Bailey Winters and accompanied by John Zeigler on keys and Patrick Morris on guitar, bass, and drums, resulting in a synth-disco album that even Europeans would get down to. Needless to say, the trio’s sophomore release was a highly anticipated one.

The boys did not disappoint. Although the track titles are not so bluntly sexual on Strength’s second self-released full-length, Mind-Reader, the content is. “Let me rub you down with brandy, let me lay you in my bed,” Winters ardently offers in the funky, hip-gyrating tune, “Brandy.” Yes, please.

His seduction gets a little darker in, “Blood,” a minor chord driven groove about a weak, thirsty vampire who has his female victim cornered as he instructs her, “Now stand back close against the wall, my hands on you feel comfortable…This is blood that will soon be mine.”

The only unsatisfying element of this record is its length. The eight-track-long LP clocks in at a measly 24 minutes that has its listener begging for more. On your next album, boys, work on your stamina.

Loomis and the Lust hit the road to support their Space Camp EP

Loomis and the Lust

Searching for fun in the avant garde landscape of serious singer/songwriters, noise bands, or whomever else can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Santa Barbara’s Loomis and the Lust is indeed that needle. Embracing pop rock for all it’s worth, their sound is a mix of hot guitar riffs, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and a danceable backbone. Their first single off the Space Camp EP, ‘Barbarella’, is a sing-along romp that mixes surf rock, Brit pop, and Motown grooves (To my dismay, I was hoping it would lean more towards Duran Duran’s ‘Electric Barbarella’ but I was mistaken).

The band will be playing Ground Zero at USC on Sept. 17th. before heading back North to play a few shows in their hometown of Santa Barbara.

Trippy Debut Video from Golden Ages!

Below is a trippy debut video from Golden Ages for “Everything Will Be Alright” off of their EP Sitting Softly in the Sea. It was directed by LA-based Bryan Schlam. The track gets your heart thumping, while the visuals leave you in a psychedelic haze drowning in feelings of loneliness and isolation. (Do we need some psychiatric help? Sometimes.) Golden Ages is working on a new album and planning some live performances locally as well as regionally. – The Deli Staff

The Doctors Fox Art Project Residency Begins Tonight

Posted on:

The Doctors Fox play a wholly unique brand of indie rock.  It brings in elements of alt-folk, funk, garage guitar tones, ska, and alternative rock a la its days of yore.  But despite the various rhythms, textures and influences, it all has a distinctive sound, cemented by the melody-oriented lead vocals ("Sarah" has gotten stuck in this writer’s head more than once).

It fits then that the band has put together an awesome and hugely collaborative residency for the month of September over at The Savant Project.  The four nights are all headlined by The Doctors Fox and include one other special musical guest each.  Additionally, there’s a local artist spotlighted each evening, and his or her art will be hanging to see and to buy!  It’s a thoughtful approach to a residency that should benefit greatly from the mix of art on display and the mix of friends and fans in attendance.

If that all didn’t sound good enough, they’re all free.  So take your admission cash and put it in the donation bucket, and/or support a local artist by buying a disc or artwork.

Schoolly D Chillin’ at Tin Angel Sept. 4

Posted on:

Veteran rapper Schoolly D is bringin’ his versatile and seasoned flow to the intimate Tin Angel tonight. Schoolly is a native of Philly and has been name dropped as an influence by everyone from Ice-T to MC Chris and Chuck D. You might know Schoolly best these days by his occasional involvement in Aqua Teen Hunger Force providing narration and one of the better theme songs of current television shows. While his style has been noted as pre-gangster rap containing urban violence and dirty realism, Schoolly now has run the gambit of hip hop through eight studio albums over 15 years and has recently released his newest album and first in over a decade, International Supersport. On the topic of supersports, Schoolly also claims to have invented snowboarding in Philly. This venue is really tiny for such a legend, so make your way to the Tin Angel tonight to get your fill of some Funk N’ Pussy, probably more of the former than the latter. But I’m guessing that there will be plenty of the latter skankin’ up the streets of Old City. Good luck. Tin Angel, 20 S. 2nd St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Adam G.

The Divine Lorraine Open Again at The Ox Sept. 4

Posted on:

The record release party for Brooklyn indie rockers Backwords isn’t the only reason to catch tonight’s show at The Ox. Folk music heartthrobs and relative newcomers, The Divine Lorraine will be opening with an acoustic set that’s jam packed with violin, banjo, and upright bass. It also features the panty-dropping vocals of Ryan Belski and occasional songbird accompaniment of Liz Boyd. The band has been working on a upcoming album and should be unleashing plenty of new tunes. Also on the lineup is impressive acoustic artists Norwegian Arms, who have some beautiful tunes up on their Bandcamp page including a five song EP titled Louise. From Our Open Blog: Calm Palm Vapor

Calm Palm Vapor is based on the Southside of Chicago (McKinley Park and Brighton Park), make Space Motown / Dreamstream music and perform all over the world. Pierogi (melodies) and secretwars (beats) teamed up to create this project in January of 2010 after realizing how stale the scene in Chicago had become. Now the two are combining forces to make textured and layered music by the Joe Meek standard of "if it sounds good, it IS good". The group plans to tour extensively and win over crowds wherever they end up.
