Toadies’ 1997 Album Drops…Today

Posted on:

Here’s a music industry story for your Tuesday: The Toadies released Rubberneck long, long ago, and saw their baby debut laminated in platinum; however, their label (Interscope) "unapproved" the follow-up, Feeler, in 1997. Years and tours and break-ups and reconstitutions later, Dallas label Kirtland Records stepped in, and so Feeler comes out…today. And you can find those Toadies playing an in-store at Waterloo Records today, 5 pm.

Craig Greenberg EP release party at Sullivan Hall on 08.21

Posted on:

On Saturday August 21, 2010, at Sullivan Hall, Long Island native Craig Greenberg will be taking the stage to celebrate the release of his second EP, “Spinning In Time.” In this long-awaited follow-up to his first EP – “The World and Back” (2007) – Craig explores a deeper level of lyrics and sound experimentation: the record bears influences that range from Broadway and Billy Joel to Phish and Ben Folds. Greenberg, along with a full band, will be performing both older material as well as songs off the latest record. The EP was produced, recorded and mixed by Roger Greenawalt (Ben Kweller, The Pierces, Julian Velard) at Shabby Road Studio in Brooklyn. – Christina Morelli

Best of NYC #5: The Antlers

Posted on:

We continue our "Best of NYC Countdown", covering every day one of the artists that made our Year End Best of NYC list for emerging artists (a chart compiled by a jury comprised of local bloggers, music writers, promoters, record store personnel, DJs, and our writers and readers).

Brooklyn’s The Antlers are led by Peter Silberman, an exceptional singer/songwriter who seems more than a little broken hearted. Now we haven’t sat at the fireside desk in our study and thoroughly pored over his lyrics just yet, but it seems the man has lost a few loves along the way. But his sadness is, sorry Mr. Silberman, our gain because his soaring and heartrending croons are pretty much perfect to listen to no matter what mood you’re in. You see, this band (Silberman, Michael Lerner, and Darby Cicci) rocks out often too, so that definitely cheers up the mellow mood. Anyway, Silberman is one of those artists that just sort of sound smart when he sings. We like mostly smart songs, but not really SUPER smart songs. We call bands who partake in super smart songs "PhD Pop" (probably the most famous current example of a PhD Pop band is The Decemberists — maybe Vampire Weekend — basically if The New Yorker likes you, you’re PhD Pop and you’ve most likely lost us along the way). – OhMyRockness.com

AM to AM CD release party Aug 19th at Crash Mansion

Posted on:

Side projects and super-groups are on the rise, and AM to AM is one of the new and noteworthy. Fashioned and fronted by Jon Schmidt and Will Tendy of New York’s Morningwood, AM to AM is perfectly power-poppy just like their previous project. However, this quintet augments their sound with electronic elements, a grungy edge, and a concoction of danceable rhythms. “Sew” ties together a series of dynamic guitar riffs and falsetto vocals, qualities that become signature “AM to AM” features. The syncopation and tension of “Pop as Science ” quiet to a shuffle that transitions into the forcefully quick “Outline,” while title track “AM to AM” slinks along with hushed vocals, synths, and strings, exploding into a sinister chorus. "Feed Me to the Ghoul” serves up a feast of electro-effects and techno beats, and concluding “Mirror Clear” decelerates into a waltzing, fusion of brass. AM to AM will be out on the town, August 19th at Crash Mansion. –Meijin Bruttomesso

Genre bending Standing Shadows @ Molly Malone’s 8/20

Posted on:

Imagine jumping in a time machine Bill and Ted style to grab My Blood Valentine and New Order then zipping them to the future to jam a bit with Muse and The Panic Division. Shoegaze/new wave/indie rock outfit Standing Shadows have been working like mad since forming earlier this year. Their first full length offering Five Years of Darkness shows the band’s range, from the expansive guitar driven ‘Circus Freak’, to the mournful laments of ‘Fade Away’.

You can check the band out this Friday, 8/20, at Molly Malone’s.

Soars Dips and Floats at KFN Aug. 17

Posted on:

Lehigh Valley natives Soars undoubtedly deserve the buzz surrounding their forthcoming debut album. Set to release next month, the outfit’s self-titled full-length includes their recent single “Throw Yourself Apart”, a gorgeous gloomy soundscape with haunting echoed vocals and tide like riffs. Persistent yet subtle backbeats propel the pulse of the song, while delicately placed distortion aids in its ebb and flow. “Five Seconds Under Dark Circles” is both breathy and well-pronounced, deliberately layered and impeccably textured. Soars’ sound nears supernatural, engulfing the listener in an eerie pool of delay and reverb. Suitably titled, “Monolith” is solid between symphonic shifts and emphasis. Proving to be a wealth of talent hidden in their humble hometown area, Soars’ dreamy shoegaze is perfect for the soon-to-be last days of summer. They’ll be opening for LA trio The Delta Mirror and depressed duo The Ropes. Kung Fu Necktie. 1250 Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Dianca Potts

Birds of Maya Rockin’ Philly at JB’s Aug. 17

Posted on:

Are you ready to rock? Well, it doesn’t really matter because Birds of Maya are going to rock enough for all of Philadelphia tonight at JB’s. Their bluesy thrashing jams are full of soul and distortion. The drums sound both aggressive and laid-back in “Sleepwalker” along with the dirty guitar licks recalling The Black Lips (if they never commercialized and instead got into the recording styles of black metal artists) or The Crystal Antlers (if they fell in love with Howlin’ Wolf instead of whomever they worship sonically). This relentless garage blues outfit released an ambitious three-song double LP Ready To Howl in April, and if you do the math (I won’t cause I don’t believe in math), then you will see that those songs are pretty fuckin’ long. It is not too surprising then to learn that the album is the soundtrack for an upcoming film by the same name, now, if only this album could come out in 3D with many tabs of acid. Opening the show will be Signals, a spastic psych rock band that has risen from the ashes of Lesser Known Neutrinos. Johnny Brenda’s 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Adam G.
