Marvelous Toy Springs Like A Well

Posted on:

Even on a Tuesday, the L.A. music scene brings the love. Admittedly, the lineup at the Troubadour last week felt a bit disjointed, but The Silent Comedy, Marvelous Toy, and Andy Clockwise did what they do for the die-hards willing to take Wednesday morning lumps with extra caffeine. If you came to see the show to see three bands you’d never seen before, you would probably surmise, "Yah, these are three bands that are rocking and sweaty," but you’d miss the nuance of each. You’d miss the Appalachian swagger of The Silent Comedy. You’d miss the preposterous over-sexualization of song as sung by Andy Clockwise. You’d miss the folksy turn of a phrase and Woodstock-revisited fete Marvelous Toy puts on. Together, I’m not sure the three bands worked. But if you came knowing who you were seeing, you could look hard, you could scratch the surface, and dig down and see it. It’s there.

Especially for Marvelous Toy. You don’t have to dig deep to see the joy springing from this Eagle Rock gang. The joy comes from their bevy of keyboards, their big hair (that’s you Jordan), and their girl-boy harmonies. Keyboardist and backing vocalist Ny Lee looked distant but occasionally gave up a smile. She was at her best when she stood front and center and sang, exposed and free from the shield of the keys. The rest of the band, on the other hand, were bouyant and energetic and timelessly young.

We met frontman Jordan outside (with his girlfriend AND his old boss, no less, who proudly claimed to be MT’s biggest fan) and the dichotomy between Jordan’s street-side persona and his onstage presence was profound. Unassuming and polite, the lead of MT took charge and poured over his songs jealously like each was a mistress. He held on so tight and then gave them up and watched us and watched the songs get set free. He had little interaction with his bandmates, playing to the audience solidly for the eight-song set. We clapped and MT smiled so graciously, seemingly charmed by the well-deserved adulation.

MT’s set was brief but packed full of energy and uplifting and bouncy and tight. Jordan wasn’t bothered by inane audience chatter. MT kept it about the music and that was the right thing to do. MT have a show on August 8, 2010 at Spaceland.

Sisters announce debut LP, play Silent Barn, July 29

Posted on:

A product of that Williamsburg based rehearsal-recording-studio+guitar pedal manufacturing workshop+venue+apartment+record label called Death By Audio, Sisters were one of the first local acts to adopt that non-chalantly lo-fi style that is now commonly accepted as THE Brooklyn DIY sound. Their noise pop owes to Dinosaur Jr and early Pavement (which is basically like saying that these guys know how to write great pop songs and strum an electric guitar) although the "fi" factor is definitely a notch lower here – as you can tell from their gritty myspace tracks. Recently signed to NYC mainstay independent label Narnack Records, the band will release their (overdue) debut CD just in time for CMJ. Check them out at Silent Barn on July 29.

Best of NYC #19: Here We Go Magic, live at Coco66, August 11

Posted on:

We continue our "Best of NYC Countdown", covering every day one of the artists that made our Year End Best of NYC list (a chart compiled by a jury comprised of local bloggers, music writers, promoters, record store personnel, DJs, and our writers and readers).

We liked solo Luke Temple just fine. His high pitched vocals on banjo layered records like Hold a Match for a Gasoline World and Snowbeast recalled Sufjan Stevens. Then came side project Here We Go Magic, and the sound of Temple fleshing out his potential. The voice was still considerably frail, but the psychedelic guitars and progressive arrangements beefed up his sound to unrecognizable heights. Still, we never twigged Temple as someone capable of dropping ‘Collector’, the first single off Here We Go Magic’s sophomore album Pigeons. The revolving guitar swirls and muted drums are so hypnotic one can forget what good fun the whole thing is. And that hook!? “I’ve got a mild fascination / for collectors”. It’s basically the only understandable lyric on the whole track, but one that rattles around your head for days. – By Dean Van Nguyen

Good Kids Sprouting Horns Summer Mini-Tour

Good Kids Sprouting Horns Summer Mini-Tour

Good Kids Sprouting Horns is a genuine alt-folk band.  The "genuine" part is worth noting because while many bands approach the folk genre with determination and, often, some degree of kitsch, Good Kids Sprouting Horns seem to belong there.  Despite their humble format (guitar, drums, and a small fleet of retro keyboards), they push folk to its boundaries, with quiet, reflective passages, momentous climaxes, engaging licks and harmonies, and song structures that lean on anything from pop to post-rock as much as folk.

If you haven’t caught them live yet, here’s your chance – the band embarks on a summer mini-tour on July 23rd.  You can see them off tonight at the SPACE Gallery or on the 23rd at Slainte, both in Portland, before they hit the road.  (Good luck with North Carolina in August, guys!  I’m sweating at the thought.)

7.23 Portland, ME – Slainte
7.24 Winooski, VT – The Monkey House
7.26 Somewhere in NY – House Show
7.27 Rochester, NY – Boulder Coffee Co
7.29 Pittsburgh, PA – Howler’s Coyote Cafe
7.30 Richmond, VA – The Triple
8.1 Durham, NC – The Pinhook
8.2 New York, NY – Pianos

Find more information at the band’s myspace.

Kuf Knotz Signs to Mad Dragon Records

Posted on:

Just wanted to congratulate Kuf Knotz on signing to Drexel’s Mad Dragon Records! We’ve been crossing paths for years now, and I’ve had a close-up view of his career at many different stages so I know how much this means to him. If his name sounds vaguely familiar, Kuf has been hustlin’ around the Philly music scene for years now. He’s also received plenty of love from Helen Leicht and the XPN crew. Kuf was an essential part of the now defunct hip hop/rock collaborative BurnDown All Stars, and is currently with The Hustle, which he founded. There are also some hot tracks that he laid down with Mutlu and Dave Quicks as Subtle Ground. (But who knows if they’ll ever see the light of day?) I look forward to seeing Kuf’s pics from the road. The guy is a master action photographer. Look out for his solo album BoomBox Logic later this year. Cheers! – Q.D. Tran

Best of NYC #19: Woods

Posted on:

Woods are both simultaneously surreal and natural. The mellow, undemanding melodies, accompanied by falsetto vocals and a raw, rugged mountaineer’s attitude, construct a strongly bound and cohesive sound. Woods play a lo-fi, fuzzy soundtrack to a series of mental trips, always creating sounds that are more than the sum of their individual parts. Because they give off such a hip vibe, it’s sometime easy to forget that at the core of the tracks are beautiful vocal melodies – and though they certainly have pop sensibility, it never sounds trite or cheap. Guitar lines and grooves sometimes perfectly matching the melodies, sometimes seemingly random, but always work – just like Brooklyn. – Paul Dunn
