Into the Burgerville
“Into the Woods” lived up to its namesake with video features of Explode into Colors and Wampire. However, the Portland-music-centric Internet series has expanded its love into the confines of Burgerville.
A fan of both, I took much enjoyment in the four musical features within the Hawthrone B-ville (‘natch). White Fang, Wampire, Juiceboxxx and the 70-odd members of Typhoon all contributed their efforts to annoy anyone whose interest in milkshakes surpasses their interest in our local music scene. See for yourself here.

Brenda release Silver Tower
Portland, Maine’s Brenda have had a pretty intense summer. They played the Nateva festival and they released Silver Tower, a energizing collection of songs influenced by late 90’s rock. Chock-full of delicious and emotional melodies, Silver Tower is a perfect road trip album. Some of the songs have a haunting aura to them while others are more fast-paced and dancy making a great contrast in over-all sound (think The Strokes). Brenda have a bunch of shows coming up around New England including the Wilco Solid Sound Festival at Mass MOCA.

Minorcan
Minorcan, also known as Ryan Anderson, and sometimes erroneously identified as Minocran (and much more difficult to google as such), has an album called Keep at Hand, has a delicate sound, has a baby daughter, has a very tiny guitar, has it in mind to sound like the ocean in winter, and has a gig coming up Wednesday 7/28 at the Parish, in the illustrious company of Follow That Bird! and Leatherbag, along with Iowan headliners The Poison Control Center.
A gritty but efective video/song by Manual Zombie
These guys’ open blog blurb is as blurred as their vocals: "Two manual zombie tape releases this summer, they’ll probably cost $5 and you can probably buy them at shows, but we’re not playing anymore shows this summer, so maybe you can get them in the fall." – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
NYC artists on the rise: Greg Thomas
"In Sequence" is a track off of the upcoming album, Atlantic/Pacific, by Brooklyn-based indie rock/pop singer-songwriter Greg Thomas. Atlantic/Pacific was recorded over 5 days at Brooklyn’s The Bunker Studio with Aaron Nevezie (Wakey!Wakey!, Lowry) with musicians Kirk Schoenherr, Steve Purcell and Tim Lappin. Atlantic/Pacific will be released with a show at The Living Room on 08.18 – preview a track here. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
Pin Me Down – NYC vocalist + Bloc Party’s guitarist
Pin Me Down probably wouldn’t exist without the magic of the "internets" (as ex-President Bush gloriously renamed them a few years ago). The band is an electro-pop-rock cocktail (according to its members, their genre is “apocalyptic pop”), consisting of spicy vocalist Milena Mepris, a multi-talented musician from New York, and her illustrious foreign friend, Russell Lissack, in-your-face lead-guitarist from UK indie-sensation Bloc Party. After almost 5 years of constructing songs through email exchanges, the duo has finally finished working on their self-titled debut, which was released this April on Milena’s own label ‘Animalized Music’ – and it’s available for download pretty much anywhere on the… internets, of course! – Mikhael Agafonov
Best of NYC #16: The Depreciation Guild
We continue our "Best of NYC Countdown", covering every day one of the artists that made our Year End Best of NYC list (a chart compiled by a jury comprised of local bloggers, music writers, promoters, record store personnel, DJs, and our writers and readers).
Taking on different aspects of pop music can get you varying degrees of success and Brooklyn band The Depreciation Guild has found a way to mix it up with their take on shoegazing emo/pop running alongside Nintendo backing tracks. The band started turning heads and ears in 2007 after the release of their album "In Her Gentle Jaws" as a free download. Their 1st release “Nautilus” was a 3 song EP that got them the attention of 8-Bit People, a small label whose love for video games is not hidden in shame. The bands’ sophomore release, Spirit Youth, sees a departure from the lo-tech 8-bit blips that made the debut album so recognizable. We find instead an even more pronounced shoegaze element in layered guitar and ethereal vocals.
String/Soul/Eye
The San Antonio based small press Kendra Steiner Editions is branching out into the realm of recorded music and one of their first three sonic releases just happens to be the new album from Plastic Crimewave. The album is called string/soul/eye and features five new ambient tracks. Although just five tracks the album spans over 50 minutes in length. The album is a perfect meditation on sound and allows the listen to search through the various layers that Sir Plastic Crimewave creates. Built mainly on guitar, banjo, & raagini, this album is filled with texture and soul. When you take in the catalog of Plastic Crimewave as a whole, this is a fine and expected addition. The release is on cd only and is printed in an addition of 100.

Moab Strangers play a live score to the 1922 film Hungry Hearts
This Monday, Ethan Miller (Howlin Rain, Comets on Fire) will be performing an original score to the 1922 film Hungry Hearts with members of Colossal Yes and Drunk Horse. The musicians have come together to perform as Moab Strangers. The combination of psychedelic, folk and blues influenced elements that each of the members bring to the project should pair interestingly with the film about a family of Jewish immigrants in the Lower East Side [check out a sample of the score below]. The event is worth checking out whether you are a film fan, a live music fan or if you’re just finally ready to give up on the dream of Pink Floyd coming to the next screening of The Wizard of Oz at the Castro Theater.
Hungry Hearts screens at the Castro Theater as part of the 30th Anniversary San Francisco Jewish Film Festival on Monday, July 26th at 7pm. $15

Some Foolery Yet in this Unique San Francisco Trio – Foolproof Four at Cafe du Nord
What exactly is foolproof about the San Francisco-based band Foolproof Four? Well the first obvious thing to point out is that there are, in fact, only three of them, so that right there points to some clear foolery committed by this trio. They are a band that must be seen live, as the camaraderie between these young men is hilarious and creates really great audience engagement. The band consists of Noah Grant, Dan Brennan, and Nate Harris. At their show at Cafe Du Nord on Friday night, July 16th, the band played almost ten songs to a rapt audience. The energy they put out was very well reciprocated, as the crowd was in step with their every joking or emotional moment in each song.
As a more unusual choice for an alternative rock band, the three began with their acapella song "Lady Valia Stood Her Ground". Lead singer and songwriter Grant wrote the song as a statement on facing violence and not letting it break you. Specifically, it is about his admiration for the nonviolent protesters at UC Berkeley. But for those more inclined to rocking songs, the band has plenty of rowdier songs as well. The talent of this band is apparent by their variety–their songs include a blues, jazz and country sound. Look for their song "Economology" in the upcoming film Dream an American.
