Best of NYC #39: Liturgy

Posted on:

We continue our "Best of NYC Countdown", covering every day one of the artists that made our Year End Best of NYC list (a chart compiled by a jury comprised of local bloggers, music writers, promoters, record store personnel and DJs).

Liturgy are New York’s first black metal band to truly feel like New York—the hypnotic churn of Glenn Branca or Rhys Chatham; the transcendent ecstasy of La Monte Young’s Dream Syndicate; the art-punker cutter sprawl of the Swans or Suicide; the everydude psych of Oneida. Dudes are more likely to wear a Michael Jordan shirt than corpsepaint, more likely to attack metal with a noise-punkers zeal, more likely to make love than war. To wit: Drummer Greg Fox clearly values power and theatrics over speed, watching his BPM increase over the last two years has been nothing short of mesmerizing. – Christopher R. Weingarten

Post Post and Pony Pants – Fuck Yeah! at Silk City June 8

Posted on:

Enjoy the weather folks because I’m predicting that it’s going to be a hot summer! That’s why I’m steppin’ out tonight to Silk City to rock out with the ladies of Post Post and Pony Pants. Yes – fellas, you’re invited too. Post Post is a group that we are happy to see gettin’ some buzz lately and with good reason. For such a young band, their chemistry is undeniable as they churn out some catchy-ass tunes, and Michelle Zauner’s troubled-teen vocals could certainly become the guilty pleasure of tight-jeaned, testosterone-filled indie rockers all over. What shouldn’t be any rockers’ guilty pleasure are Pony Pants because that’s what they came here to do. Well that and maybe “do drugs and fuck! Ah, what!?!” Silk City, 435 Spring Garden St., 9pm, $5, 21+ (Post Post Photo by Noah Temple)

Miami Knights

Posted on:

This weekend we finally got a taste of the new album from the experimental dance-pop group Mahjongg. The track is called “Miami Knights” and it comes from The Long Shadow of the Paper Tiger which is due out on K Records on July 20th. The track is synth-drenched and strange, but we would expect nothing less from this band. Yet, as this is as choppy and unsettling as you may come across it is clear that there is melody and rhythm and even order behind this madness. Towards the end of this four minute track you can feel the chaos forming a pattern, and your dancing becomes a little more structured. The track features the help of Suddenly Susan & Jeanine O’Toole.

Mahjongg plays at Subterranean on July 9th.

Every Little Drop

Posted on:

Chicago has had a powerful metal scene for awhile now, and it looks like Nachtmystium may be the next band to break out. They are releasing their new album Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II tomorrow via Century Media. The track they released in advance of the album is called “Every Little Drop” and it is a darkly hypnotic journey through the gutter and back again. Focusing on addiction and all the fierce violence that can bring, Nachtmystium is not for the faint of heart. The epic eight minute track illustrates how the band has that deep dark metal edge, but is not afraid to add other elements like synthesizers and acoustic guitars.

The band will be performing two shows at Empty Bottle on June 19th and 20th.

Tyburn Saints CD release party, June 11at Mercury Lounge

Posted on:

Tyburn Saints will celebrate the release of his debut album “For The Benefit of Strangers” with a show at The Mercury Lounge on Friday 6/11 at  11pm. "For the Benefit of Strangers" was recorded at Dreamland Studios. The setting was fitting, a late 19th century church converted to a studio that has in the past hosted the likes of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Weezer, and Dinosaur Jr. and more recently Beach House, Yeasayer, and The Hold Steady. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

NYC Artists on the rise: Lemonade

Posted on:

Consisting of San Francisco transplants, Brooklyn’s Lemonade picks up a world of influences. From dance-rock to house and almost everything in between, there’s a lot going on – a lot of blissful lusciousness. Think Q and Not U with the Christopher Richards-like vocals interspersed with random samples over entrancing beats. The trio’s latest release, “Pure Moods,” is a brilliant celebration of all things dance. The sound is big and consuming with a mash of influences that probably wouldn’t make any sense pulled into its component parts, but when layered on top of each other, the elements all sound like they are fated to be together. – Nancy Chow
