Review – Marie Stella – Trust

Posted on:

trust

Marie Stella’s six song Trust starts with a distorted guitar creeping around and ends with a decaying synth line and in between is 20 minutes of joyful experiments in building and breaking crescendos. The twisting warp and weft of Bryan Bruchman and Matthew Erickson’s zipping guitars, the interplay of female vocals (lead: Sidney Bourke, accompaniment: Katherine Hulit), Derek Gierhan’s crashing drums (he sat in on the recording, now it’s Max Heinz) weave a powerful tapestry. Marie Stella is fluent in dynamic range. Blue Blood starts off simply with Sidney singing over all-or-nothing instrumentation. Guitars, bass and drums kick on and off. She sings "I don’t need a lover to bring me down" and the song changes moods, increasing the energy with a steady beat and then, as she affirms her identity, the song kicks into high gear and becomes a thumping, driven machine. The hook grabs, as the band builds into an energetic melee. Bryan’s mean guitar cuts a wandering scar on "Taken", which builds itself out of an atmospheric soup into a sinister cacophony of frenzied drums and adrenaline bass. Guitars and synth bounce off each other in a sonic mosh pit… finally resolving into a sincere declaration: "No more shenanigans." Then turns for the chaotic as Sidney and Katherine belt out a punchy chorus. Ron Harrity recorded, mixed and mastered the album at Forest City Studio. He captures the twin interplays of voices and guitars with aplomb. What could be noisy and muddy is instead a beautifully crafted and wonderfully dense soundscape. The interweaving vocals and guitars create two strong cords that Marie Stella climbs and builds on. It’s woven with deft complexity and it’s worth losing your hearing for. Disposing of Betrayers

Posted on:

The End Records have released the details of the new album from These Are They. Disposing of Betrayers is the follow-up to their 2009 album Who Linger, and focuses on Chicago’s deep and complex history of organized crime. The lyrics through the new album will utilize and rediscover actual events taken from newspaper articles. Here is what vocalist Paul Kuhr had to say about the album, “Taking a topic like Chicago crime history, and still making it a death metal record, posed more of a challenge for Steve and me, who wrote all the lyrics. I think the crushing production, aggressive riffing and drumming, and the interesting topic all came together to create what I feel is an amazing recording. I’m quite proud of this one.” The album will be released on September 14th.

Tracklisting:
The Massacre
Behind the Door
The Sins of My Brothers
No Angels to Catch You
By Phaeton’s Design
Cranial Hemorrhage
La Mano Nera
Evening Widows
Disposal of Betrayers

NC Artists on the Rise: Beloved Rogue

Posted on:

Beloved Rogue is 3 friends.  Alex and Sean, who grew up here in Brooklyn, and Mike who moved to town many years ago from Boston. He had started Beloved Rogue a few years back. Previously involved in other projects, they soon bonded over a love of BJM, the Lilys and Serena Maneesh. Getting together at Seaside Lounge Studios near Sunset Park they put together a 3 song EP “Polaurora”. It includes the video and single “Daysleeping” which contains some nice jangly pop moments in its 6 minute run. The other songs on the EP run down the indie road towards the middle of the pavement, we particularly like the mellower Capital Sense. Upcoming shows this summer include the Northside Fest at Bar Matchless on June 26th. Look for some road dates and another single coming soon. – Simon Heggie

Birds of Maya Flyin’ High at KFN June 14

Posted on:

Local psychedelic garage ROCK power trio Birds of Maya will be bringing their heavy blues riffs and avalanche of distortion to an unsuspecting Monday night at Kung Fu Necktie. But we all know that Rock has no idea what day it is. I’m guessing that Jimi will be smiling down on them tonight when they takeover the stage. You can grab Birds of Maya’s latest release Ready to Howl, an ambitious 3-song double LP brought to you by one of our favorite daredevil Philly labels, Richie Records. It’s the soundtrack to an upcoming feature film with the same name. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $5, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

The 2nd Annual Dock Street Music Fest at Dock Street Brew Pub June 13

Posted on:

The moment Dock Street Brew Pub organized its first annual music festival last year it looked to be a dynamic event that would be held for years to come. And while last years was a pretty hard lineup to top, it looks like they might have just done it ten fold. Since it resides on a street that is tied to such West Philly music staples as Grandchildren and Stinking Lizaveta, it should be no secret to anyone that both bands are back to rock the foundation of this years lineup. They’ll be joined by the politically charged reggae Latin rock band Among Criminals who have been hitting it big time thanks to their latest EP War, and are getting ready for some huge shows alongside the likes of Jello Biafra and Tom Morello. The melodic siren calls and harmonious strings of Chasing Arethusa channel images of pixies and Greek mythology, and should make for an ethereal addition to the other bands playing. Top it all with the melodic melancholy of The Homophones, fresh beer, and plenty of brats and pizza. It’s set to be a memorable occasion. Dock Street Brew Pub, 701 S. 50th St., 2pm – 6pm, Free, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Mischief Brew Brewing Up Some Mischief at First Unitarian June 12

Posted on:

Hailing from pissed-off Pennsylvania, local punks Mischief Brew, cook up a riot like nobody’s business. Between frontman Erik Petersen’s antics and punk-folk riffs, this Philly collective knows how to keep it fresh. Mischief Brew’s mix of marimba and mandolin bring to mind Eastern European street parades, or a less sophisticated Gogol Bordello. With the DIY aesthetic that Against Me! now lacks, Petersen along with his  bandmates  crank up the volume with tracks like, “Fight Dirty”, and “A Liquor Never Brewed”. Think the summer of ‘77, Mischief Brew is punk as fuck. They’ll be taking the stage with the garden state surf punks Mirrors and Wires. Leave your studded belts at home. Serpent Throne – None Shall Pass at June 12

Posted on:

Citing Black Sabbath and the Dark Lord of the Underworld (and in the Church Lady-est voice in my head, “mmm…Satan”) as influences, local instrumental four-piece Serpent Throne is an aural work out in epic ruthlessness. With 2007’s Ride Satan Ride and 2009’s The Battle of Old Crow (available on Philly’s Vessel Records), the stoner act fuses twisting arrangements, leaden drum batters and mammoth guitar riffs to construct valiantly protracted oeuvres or in short, music so much bigger than the body it escapes the physical realm. No, seriously – see for yourself tonight at the M Room, where they’ll play alongside the ambitious hometown power-trio Gondola, and Los Angeles-based psychedelic hard rock throwback Dead Meadow. M Room, 15 W. Girard Ave, 9 pm, $12,  21+ – Annamarya Scaccia
