The Return of Scotland Yard Gospel Choir @ Subt

Posted on:

Scotland Yard Gospel Choir are making their return to the stage at Subterranean tomorrow night. This will be the bands first show since their horrible van accident back in September 2009. They were on their way to the first gig on their tour to support their latest full-length album "… and the horse you rode in on". We are so glad to see them back performing and healthy.

The show at Subt starts at 9pm and also includes Wells-Next-To-The-Sea and Very Truly Yours.

Goodnight Lights CD Release Party at JB’s June 18

Posted on:

Last year was a breakout year for Goodnight Lights since it marked the release of their critically acclaimed self-titled debut. But the band is ready to kick it up a notch in 2010 with the release of their sophomore album Electric Spark, which can be downloaded for free on their website. This 9 song undertaking was self-produced with the bands bassist Jonah Delso at the helm, and the album artwork was created by drummer Michael Ziegler. The end result is a dynamic product that echoes the sound of some of their influences such as Pixies, Cake, and Guided By Voices. The band is set to celebrate in epic fashion at Johnny Brenda’s tonight, and they’ll be joined by their good friends The Quelle Source. The band has been catching eyes and ears since putting out Enjoy The Ridge over the winter, and songs like "The State Line" and "Scratch Your Fast Forward" are sure to be anthems that signify the energy of the evening. The Fridays in June Concert Series with WPO at Cianfrani Park June 18

Posted on:

During the summer the finest parks in Philly come alive with the sound of music. And tonight is a rare occasion, because South Philly is going to get treated to one of the best of the West. Whether it’s been during one of Clark Park’s many festivals, farmers markets on 40trh Street, or other fine occasions like Bastille Day, West Philadelphia Orchestra have been no strangers to filling the summertime air with their joyous tunes. And just like their monthly gigs at Tritone, WPO are sure to have Cianfrani Park moving to their Balkan dance beats and Eastern European Folk. And their sure to have Patrick Hughes, Elliot Levin, and an assortment of other major Philly music players in tow when their 14 strong take it to the grass. Cianfrani Park, 8th and Fitzwater St., 7pm, FREE, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Last Minute Plans: Boutros @ Schubas

Posted on:

I have to admit that I was surprised by the brother duo known as Boutros. I am not sure if it was the album title, Flat Tires Make Friends, or their myspace page, or what, but I was not expecting what these two delivered. The album is built primarily on keyboards, and is filled this modernized take on ‘70’s am pop with strong traces of r&b. It’s refreshing not because it is all that original, but because it really comes out nowhere and is done really well. The first track from the album is called “Late Night Ring” and is a perfect example of this.

Boutros will be playing at Schubas tonight (June 17th) with Minneapolis band Lookbook.

Pains of Being Pure at Heart release video + play Sirens Fest

Posted on:

The Pains have been very productive as of late – didn’t they release a new video like a month ago? Anyway, this one comes with some fresh news: the band will be making their next live NYC appearance at the 10th Annual Siren Festival in Coney Island precisely on the hottest day of the year (which always conicides with the Siren Fest, did you notice?). They’ll be sharing the stage with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Matt & Kim and recent tour buddies, Surfer Blood. Immediately after their performance the Pains travel to the UK and Europe to complete a mini tour.

NYC artists on the rise: Oh You Devil at Rooftop Films on 06.18

Posted on:

Oh You Devil is Yuri Velez (drums/vocals), Marc Berger (guitar), Ari Brand (keyboard), and Reinhardt Schuhmann (bass). A relatively new band, the group seems poised for a bright future. After just a few short months of gigging, they’ve already gained a reputation for their live shows and have played to packed crowds at Pianos, Bar Matchless, Fontanas, and Sycamore. Reminiscent of Radiohead and Blonde Redhead, their music is expansive, moody, and deeply expressive. Rich, textured harmonies and gripping arrangements fused with lead singer Velez’s emotive vocals create a truly mesmerizing sound. Check out a recording of Receive Me with guest vocalist Leah Hayes from Scary Mansion/La Laque on their Myspace page. They are playing a Rooftop Films show on Friday, June 18th on the roof of New Design High School (350 Grand Street @ Essex). – Danielle Kourtesis

New Video by The Pierces

Posted on:

We just received this message from The Pierces: "The new tv show "Pretty Little Liars" is using The Pierces song, "Secret" as their theme song, so Allie and I made a video for it! We directed it ourselves and it turned out purty good for a last minute, shoestring budget kinda thing. Also, we just finished a new record and signed a record deal with Polydor Records in London! So hopefully our next video will be a big budget extravaganza, directed by Michael Bay with airplanes and desert scenes and explosions and shit…but until then…we leave you with this…"

Dinowalrus and Telenovelas play Cameo on June 20

Posted on:

It’s always a cause for celebration when two bands noted for their creativity and energy grace the stage on the same night. Such is the case this Sunday when Brooklyn’s own Dinowalrus and the young upstarts Telenovelas (their guitar in the picture) appear at Cameo Gallery ( 93 N6th Street between Berry and Wythe, in the back of the Lovin’ Cup Cafe). Word has it that Dinowalrus will be doing an extra special show as long-time multiple instrumentalist Kyle departs afterwards to pursue other musical projects. The Dino’s wish him well, however, as they continue on with a series of east coast shows. Telenovelas, meanwhile, have been making a name for themselves after playing a number of shows over the last few months. With a sound that combines psychedelia, jangly pop and fuzzed out noisy reverberated chaos, their appeal is obvious. In addition to this show at Cameo, Telenovelas will be also appearing the following night at Bruar Falls ( 245 Grand Street between Driggs Av and Roebling St , Williamsburg , Brooklyn ) with not one, but two Beach Fossils side projects -Red Romans and Heavenly Beat. Two great opportunities to catch this band and see what all the buzz is about. – Dave Cromwell

Sub Pop’s Pissed Jeans LIVE at JB’s June 17

Posted on:

The Philadelphia (by way of Allentown) noise rock purveyors Pissed Jeans are golden gods around these parts. Their brusque version of hardcore – sludgy, vagrant sensory assaults crusted with throaty brays best defined in 2009’s King of Jeans (Sub Pop) – has gotten the word-of-mouth treatment, packing venues like sardines just through meager curiosity. And their evocatively mutinous live sets certainly raise the ante, taking Pissed Jeans up scores of notches from “buzz worthy” to absolutely necessary. So, as if your life depended on it, go to Johnny Brenda’s tonight and watch them tear it down with Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Annamarya Scaccia

Me Likey An American Chinese at North Star Bar June 17

Posted on:

An American Chinese reminds me of that feeling you get when you hear something that’s totally new and yet oddly familiar at the same time, like an old friend that you forgot about and then remembered is absolutely amazing. There’s definitely a lot of that punky folk-pop, not unlike the Violent Femmes, and then other tracks carry the mark of Elephant 6 bands, with their playful synths and vocal harmonies. But neither of these things is particularly intrusive, and at the end of your listening experience, all you can really think of is "Hmm…An American Chinese…Wow." Also get there early for those space oddities Orbit to Leslie. North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar Street, 9pm, $8, 21+ – Joe Poteracki
