This Tuesday, May 24th, marks the one year anniversary of the passing of Jay Bennett. He is most widely known for his work with Wilco, but around the city he is known for so much more. A producer, collaborator and solo artist, Jay has been missed, and now there is a way to remember him and help continue his work and legacy. The Jay Bennett Foundation will launch on May 24 on JayBennett.org, on Facebook and at Twitter. On July 10, fans will also be able to support the JBF by downloading the album Jay was completing at the time of his death. The download of Kicking at the Perfumed Air is free, but donations are accepted and will benefit the foundation or one of its partner charities. Kicking at the Perfumed Air will also be available to purchase as a CD via the site on July 10, with a percentage of the proceeds going to the Foundation. “M Plates” is a track from this new album.

Album Review – Patrick Coman – Southern Storms
Thick with both rural twang and urban sophistication, Boston singer/songwriter Patrick Coman combines folky poetry and country-style storytelling on his latest release, Southern Storms. Violin, organ, and a silky lap steel swell under Coman’s weary voice as he laments and introspects with the quiet intensity of Neil Young and the earnest exhaustion of Jeff Tweedy. Moody and rife with meteorological metaphors, the album feels at times like an Elliott Smith ode to isolation, but the monotony breaks with the southern-fried “Nights Like Tonight” and “Fortune Cookie.” The wistful, soft-spoken “Rear-view Mirror (“Why am I lonely on New Year’s Eve?”) brings to mind a “Dressed Up Like Nebraska”-era Josh Rouse while tracks like “Gram Parsons” reveal obvious leanings towards erstwhile Drive-By Truckers frontman Jason Isbell. Patrick Coman’s power as a songwriter lies in his ability to bravely delve into the haunted parts of our ego that grapple with yearning, loneliness, and regret. Without trepidation, he uncovers desperate, self-pitying stones that are instantly and painfully recognizable to anyone who has ever felt unbearably overwhelmed by sorrow and alienation. Perhaps this isn’t the best album for a Sunday drive (unless it’s off a cliff), but when you’re ruminating over a past lover or lost opportunity, no album will feel more right.
NYCMUSICSHOW replaces NY Noise on Channel 25?
NYCMUSICSHOW is a new TV show airing on NYClife (channel 25) on Sundays at 10pm. This is currently the only show on TV dedicated to the independent New York music scene (New York Noise, that was mostly but not entirely focused on local artists, hasn’t been airing in the last few months). NYCMUSICSHOW is currently scheduled to deliver a total of five episodes. After that, the editors will need to get funding from sponsors to continue producing future episodes (to this point, this has been a self financed project). The second episode, airing on Sunday May 23 at 10 pm, will feature local funk masters Soulive, veteran rockers The Giraffes, and dancey combo Navegante. Check it out!
This is Fancy
The Streets On Fire announced the details of their full-length debut This Is Fancy. The album will be released on July 20th via The Currency Exchange, and features 11 new tracks. Recorded over the course of four days with the help of friends at Woohoo Studios, the band kept a foot in the past using analog recording gear and tracking to a 1” 8-track MCItape machine. Mixed by Alex Gross at Chicago’s famed Studio 11 and with the mastering touch of Shellac’s Bob Weston, the result is a decadently tattered, high-energy sound with a retro-aesthetic appeal. This is the follow-up to the band’s debut EP, 2009’s Hot Weekend.
We have the first single from the album an interesting track called “No One’s F-ing to the Radio”. The Street’s on Fire will be celebrating the release of the album on July 2nd at Double Door.
My Other Friend announce release debut album in July
We’ve been following indie poppers My Other Friend for quite some time and it’s good to know they are finally about to release their debut album – a digital release out towards the end of July. In the past few years the band has collected a series of rather prestigious supporting slots, sharing stages with the likes of Titus Andronicus, Bear Hands, The Beets, and Drink Up Buttercup. The full-length, entitled "Burning Bright Tonight" was produced by Kevin McMahon (The Walkmen, The French Kicks).

Best of NYC #44: Double Wonderful
We continue our "Best of NYC Countdown", covering every day one of the artists that made our Year End Best of NYC list (a chart compiled by a jury comprised of local bloggers, music writers, promoters, record sotre personnel and DJs). Many of the bands in this list will play The Deli’s Best of NYC Fest in Williamsburg in May (6 shows in 3 different venues between the 13 and the 15).
Unapologetically mainstream, Double Wonderful creates in-your-face, energetic pop melodies, often accompanied by 80’s snyths and even that nifty T-Pain vocal effect. It’s pop-geek-dance-rock, and I can’t imagine these guys take themselves too seriously…which isn’t necessarily a bad thing here; if nothing else, this music is fun. The snobbier listener may immediately dismiss this, but I don’t give a shit who you are, it’ll be hard not to smile and move to these sounds. Double Wonderful seem to exist on the border of obnoxiously generic and pop genius. They don’t care – they’re having a blast. – Paul Dunn
