I couldn’t think of anything more enjoyable to do with my highly anticipated summer nights than going to see The Parson Red Heads live, and in concert. The band just released their summer tour schedule onto their myspace. They play tonight at Spaceland and again on June 9th at the Troubador.

Last Minute Plans: The Mutts @ Mutiny
If you are looking for a dose of gritty bar room rock tonight then I would like suggest The Mutts. This trio just released a new ep called We Float. It is the second of three that they will be giving away for free this year. The ep contains five raucous tunes that stomp, stumble, and scream throughout. The band has only been together since July of 2009, and have had a slight line-up change, but still have put together a fine ep.
The Mutts will be playing at Mutiny (2428 N. Western Ave) tonight (May 28th) and there is no cover. The band will take the stage around 11:30pm.
Notes from The Depreciation Guild’s CD release party
Indie heartthrob lovers were swooning Tuesday night at The Depreciation Guild‘s release party for their new album "Spirit Youth" which came out on May 18th on Brooklyn Label Kanine Records. The crowd was full of post-pubescent hipsters rocking out to the sounds of The Depreciation’s new record which was played in it’s entirety that night. The band debuted a new 4th member on bass/keys who managed to squeeze in some modest stage presence looming over their 8-bit Nintendo’s flashing power LED on and off throughout the night. The Famicon bleeped emo electronics throughout their set blending with the soft guitar sounds. As their onstage excitement escalated on to the night’s end, the crowd responded eagerly with bouncing heads bobs and wailing fist pumps to round out a night of innocent fun for the Brooklyn youth scene. – Simon Heggie
Skinny Dippin’ Video Premier
Essex Channel announced yesterday that they will finally be releasing the video for their catchy summer pop tune “Skinny Dippin’” on June 19th. They have been working on this since the release of the album that the track appears on, “Love is Proximity” many months ago.
The video is something like you might imagine, but I don’t know the full scope or detail. The video follows Essex Chanel fans in different everyday life scenarios in the Windy City. Whether biking at Oak Street Beach, photocopying in the office or trying to unclog a ketchup bottle at Friar Tuck’s, each fan gets interrupted amidst their task and finds a message. They all drop what they are doing and follow the command of the message. The next thing you know, the fans and band members of Essex Chanel are stripping down, jump in the pool naked, synchronized swimming ensues and then the video takes a turn that nobody could have predicted.
The premiere takes place on June 19th at The Academy of Music & Dance. Tickets are $10 and include free drinks, DVD of Music Video, poster, and other goodies.
Bonnaroo 2010 Preview
Tennessee’s beloved festival Bonnaroo is fast approaching, and if it’s anything as good as it was last year, then you’d better hurry up and buy tickets while they’re still on sale.
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the best few months, the headliners include Dave Matthews Band, Nashville’s Kings of Leon, Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z. Nashville has more than Kings representing at the festival. Other Nashville bands set to play are Space Capone, The NCOs, Caitlin Rose and John Prine, as well as several other Tennessee bands from Knoxville and Memphis.
Over the course of the festival we will be posting up our favorite acts of the day – which is always a difficult process, considering there are three or four great bands you have to miss in order to see one you know is going to be great.
Bonnaroo is a great festival, and if you haven’t been, then we highly recommend it. It’s more than 80,000 hippies listening to 100 hippie bands. There is much more to do than listen to music. There’s a Silent Disco: a gigantic covered dance floor where everyone wears headphones tuned into the DJs music, so everyone can hear the music loud and clear – no need for bunching up near the front and encroaching on everyone else’s space. The best part is that from the outside a hundred sweaty people are dancing to what looks like absolute silence.
There are air conditioned tents to watch the NBA finals and the World Cup.
There is a play that repeats several times during the day.
There are comedy tents and celebrity interviews, also air conditioned.
There is delicious food, and endless water tanks to fill up and ward off the heat of the day.
There are showers provided by Garnier™.
There are awesome people who are ready to be your friend and share their…food…with you.
Be there, go wild and come back with pics. – Deli Staff
Brendan Hogan CD release at Passim 6/3
Deli folk favorite, Brendan Hogan is celebrating the release of Long Night Coming at Club Passim June 3th. Hogan’s music is Dylan-influenced folk/blues with lots of emotion and beautiful energy. He’s been a long-standing contributor to the Boston music scene and played our showcase in March at the Armory. Hogan was host and producer at WERS and WGBH FM for ten years. He will also be celebrating his birthday! And we all know musicians play their very best on their birthdays. This show gets the Deli – New England’s first use of a smiley. Check out the interview we did with him in January HERE.

Weekly Feature #204b: Penguin Prison – Live at Santos on June 9
New York’s Penguin Prison is far from waddling and awkward. In fact, Chris Glover (vocals, instruments, production), who operates under the alias "Penguin Prison," has developed a smooth, gliding, and sleek sound with the company of notable electronic/pop artists, including members of Holy Ghost and Longpigs. Together they fashion electro-pop dance tracks that would suit club scenes from the underground to the chic, by melding synthesizer loops, computerized blips and bleeps, and disco levity. The bubblegum EP title track, "The Worse It Gets," dreamy techno-beats and falsetto-vocals of "Something I’m Not," and singles, a playful and sing-song-y "Animal Animal," and an infectiously bouncy "A Funny Thing", demonstrate Penguin Prison’s natural instincts for effervescent, danceable compositions. As a re-mixer for other artists’ tunes, such as Marina and the Diamonds’ "I Am Not a Robot" and Goldfrapp’s "Rocket," Penguin Prison adds an airy groove to select tracks and transforms them to complement a party atmosphere. – Read Meijin Bruttomesso’s interview with Chris Glover here.
Weekly Feature #204a: Jacques Detergent
Jacques Detergent is the band that wrote the soundtrack to the imaginary lo-fi, indie version of the James Bond film series – unless you think the "Pink Panther" series filled that gap. The Brooklyn based quartet, who played at Cameo during The Deli’s Best of NYC Fest, has a knack for suspenseful quirky instrumental tunes. Read Simon Heggie’s interview with the band here.
