Holy Ghost is a rather new electronic duo that’s about to start a world tour with their good friends LCD Soundsystem (this is why they say that PR is an important part of everybody’s career!). The guys sound to us like a mix between the chilled atmoshperes of Air and disco influences inspired to the electronic sound of the 80s. Booty shakers may want to see them perform at Terminal 5 with LCD (only 1 date out of the 4 booked is not sold out yet). Their upcoming EP, Static on the Wire, will be released on May 18th on DFA Records.

The benefit compilation they have created is available only by making at least a $10 donation to Quennect4 through Kickstarter. Midnight Masses play Deli Fest on 05.13 at Bklyn Bowl with Beach Fossils
Religion inspires musicians in a variety of ways. Some praise the lord (gospel) others worship the devil (death metal). Religion gifted Madonna her most memorable moment, and only last year Christopher Owens utilised his upbringing in the Children of God cult to inspire a Beach Boys-esque pop album with his band Girls. Midnight Masses are at completely the other end of the spectrum from Owens. Redemption, sin and death run through their music, reflecting leader Autry Fulbright’s upbringing as a preacher’s son. Religious imagery is rife. Their vocals often ring out which a church-like echo. No doubt the untimely death of Fulbright’s father acted as a catalyst for these meditations, but from that tragedy, something beautiful has grown. I spoke to Midnight Masses’ front man on these inspirations. – Read Dean Van Nguyen’s interview with the band here. See them live at the Deli’s Best of NYC Fest on 05.13 at Brooklyn Bowl.
Warpaint Will Help You Excell at Spelling
I can confidently aver that Warpaint‘s "Billie Holiday" has been stuck deeply in my head for several days. This would quickly be deemed as problematic by most, but I’m rather enjoying it. However, I cannot say the same for those I associate with. I myself am not an extraordinary singer, and listening to me spell out B-I-L-L-I-E in a sing songy fashion is not what most consider enjoyable. Watch this video and torture your friends like I have been. Also, catch them before they embark on their European tour on May 8th at the Bootleg Theater.
Dedicated Ears Show @ Chopin Theater
This Saturday music blog Dedicated Ears will be hosting a concert that will feature two quality local singer/songwriters. I long felt that Brendan Losch is one of the most underrated musicians in the city and I was thrilled to see him included in this line-up. Brendan was kind enough to send me a new track for everyone to enjoy.
You can catch Brendan with David Safran and Pretty Little Empire (St. Louis) at Chopin Theater on Saturday May 8th.

From the Open Blog: Ryan Young
White Citrus, the second studio LP from Ryan Young, is an eclectic collection of songs ranging from greasy Southern rock to front porch Americana. Showcasing Ryan’s mature songwriting and instrumental prowess, White Citrus reverberates with a vibrancy often missing from contemporary music. Self-produced and recorded, the album swings, twangs, grooves and rocks – sometimes all within the same song. Ryan first gained experience playing in Dallas, Louisiana and Colorado before relocating to Austin in 2004. He has shared the stage with acts like Galactic, Vernon Reid and Rose Hill Drive. A true DIY artist in practice and spirit, Ryan is versatile enough to perform in any setting, be it solo, duo or with a full band.

Best of NYC #50: Monogold – live at Deli Best of NYC Fest, 05.15
We continue our "Best of NYC Countdown", covering every day one of the artists that made our Year End Best of NYC list (a chart compiled by a jury comprised of local bloggers, music writers, promoters, record sotre personnel and DJs). Many of the bands in this list will play The Deli’s Best of NYC Fest in Williamsburg in May (6 shows in 3 different venues between the 13 and the 15).
This brooklyn 3-piece rocks around the town with a falsetto voice and nicely patterned rhythms which had them on the road this spring with The Stationary Set after an appearance at SXSW. Formed in 2006 they released an EP titled “Waves” in 2007 and are now promoting their newest release “We Animals” which came out last year. These recent road dates find the band’s live show played out more aggressively than their sleepily tinged album suggests. But in their love for all things mammalian, Monogold finds themselves situated somewhere between the sea and the land playing shows to friends and fans who can appreciate hand drawn cover art and self-recorded music. See them live at The Deli’s Best of NYC Fest on May 15 at Cameo gallery with The Vandelles, Jacques Detergent, The Courtesy Tier and El Jezel. – Simon Heggie
Reckless Sons live at Bowery Electric, May 7
On May 4 NY’s Reckless Sons played a semi-under-the-radar gig at Pianos, accompanied by Young the Giant, Twin Tigers, and Gift Horse. Boasting bravado and uninhibited dynamism, Reckless Sons unleashed some of their better known tunes, “Gimme a Sign” and “Too Young to Choose,” along with yet to be released “Graduated” and “Whipping Boy.” An immediately gripping combination of strumming guitar melodies, tight drum licks, and impassioned vocals, Reckless Sons’ edgy blend of jangle pop and swaggering rock captures the defining elements of New York’s music scene. In case Tuesday was missed, Friday night at Bowery Electric will provide a second chance to catch Reckless Sons’ down and dirty demeanor. They will be sharing the stage with Brooklyn’s Brother’s and Philly’s Pawnshop Roses. Doors at 8PM, 21+. –Meijin Bruttomesso
Hair Rocket Calls for “Hair Hit” on Xiu Xiu
Multi-instrumentalist and Berklee dropout Chris Blasucci, the warped-mind behind Hair Rocket, is calling for a “hair hit” on art-poppers Xiu Xiu. Below is a strange statement posted on his website.
Yesterday I heard on Pitchfork the band Xiu Xiu began collecting locks of hair at shows in which they will later burn and inhale the smoke. This media stunt has no history and is well overshadowed by a true musical hair sacrificing art.
Over 2 years ago the band and hair rocket movement came into existence when I made a cathartic music video about collecting hair from ex-lovers, making a wig from it and launching it on a rocket in hopes of closure. I’m not sure if it worked but it made me think a lot and I thought others might enjoy doing it and possibly learning something about themselves in a ridiculous ritual. I formed a band, Hair Rocket and recorded an EP, “Novelty” and began collecting hair at shows that I later put on rocket and launched as a union between myself and the audience sacrificers. I’ve done 2 group hair rocket launchings, with over 3o collections of follicles. 2 other bands Aderbat and Mi Head Ur Head have done hair rocket rituals and I have begun taking requests from fans for personal hair rocket dedications.
So I say “BRING ME THE LOCKS OF XIU XIU”. This media stunt needs backbone!
Above is the video that started it all! I love it. And so should you. You can be part of the Hair Rocket Movement at The Khyber tonight or just enjoy Blasucci leaving it all on stage. – Q.D. Tran
