Checking out the calendar, it looks as though this weekend certainly has quite a lot of activity on the slate.

Rapidly becoming one of the Bay Area’s essentially taste makers, Epic Sauce has yet another show, this Thursday the 20th at Milk, to start your weekend with.  This one is co-presented with local PR wizards Terrorbird who will be celebrating their 4th anniversary.  Featuring Man/Miracle, Baths, The Splinters, and Sister Crayon with DJ sets by Sugar and Gold and Disco Shawn, this party is not one to be missed, 8pm.

Head down to Thee Parkside on Friday for a well packed line-up including The Fresh & Onlys, Sonny & The Sunsets, The Art Museums and out-of-toweners Jacuzzi Boys, 9pm.

Saturday night wander up Polk St to the Hemlock for the folk sounds of The Finches with Key Losers and Breezy Days Band, 9pm.

Lastly, round your weekend out at Cafe Du Nord on Sunday where our friends over at The Bay Bridged are presenting an event with KALX.  The album release party for Emily Jane White and featuring Slow Motion Cowboys and Devotionals, this relaxing folk show will be a nice place to wind down for the coming workweek.

NYC Atists on the rise: Hurricane Bells play Mercury on May 22

Posted on:

Hurricane Bells is a new indie rock project from Longwave’s Steve Schiltz. Vagrant Records released their debut album Tonight Is The Ghost digitally towards the end of 2009. Since then the band has gained momentum. The show at Mercury Lounge on May 22nd will be the last one of their East West Coast, that kept them busy for the last two weeks – recommended show.

Last Minute Plans: Love of Everything Record Release @ Empty Bottle

Posted on:

Yes, it’s Tuesday night, but sometimes a show is just so good that you have to make a point to attend. Tonight that show is the Love of Everything record release show at Empty Bottle. Best In Tensions is the latest release from the duo of Bobby Burg and Elisse La Roche. Over the years the band has received additional help fromTim Kinsella (Joan of Arc, Make Believe), Jeremy Bolen (Chin Up Chin Up), Jeanine O’Toole (1900s) and others. I haven’t heard what the line-up will be tonight, but the show is only $5 at the door and with an album like Best In Tensions to support it will be a great time.

Also appearing tonight at Empty Bottle will be Loose Dudes and Calibrated Crematorium. The show begins at 9pm.

The Depreciation Guild’s CD release party at the Knit, May 25

Posted on:

Hey, have you met The Depreciation Guild? You may already be acquainted with vocalist/guitarist Kurt Feldman and guitarist Christoph Hochheim’s other band, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart. A lot has happened since The Depreciation Guild released its debut album, “In Her Gentle Jaws” in the fall of 2007. Initially available as a free download, “In Her Gentle Jaws” was picked up by Kanine Records, who signed the band and released the remastered album on CD and vinyl last year. The band added a live drummer, Anton Hochheim, and has trekked across the country and beyond with the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Cymbals Eat Guitars, School of Seven Bells and most recently, Norwegian noise rockers Serena-Maneesh.
The Depreciation Guild returns strong with a mature, pensive sophomore album, “Spirit Youth.” While the Famicom is more apparent in “In Her Gentle Jaws,” the more subtle use of the gaming system’s oscillating beeps shifts the band closer to dream pop than to 8-bit music. Recorded during the summer of last year, “Spirit Youth” yields a slicker coat of production helmed by Telefon Tel Aviv’s Joshua Eustis. The richer album is a seamless collection of melodious tunes adorned with lush, amorous guitars and striking drums. The lovelorn lyrics, sonic evocation of dream pop bands of yesteryear and sounds of the Nintendo that have long been muffled and neglected in closets leave listeners with a sense of longing for the days of our youth. Celebrate the release of “Spirit Youth,” which drops on May 18, at the band’s record release show with Wild Nothing and Braids at the Knitting Factory on May 25. P.S. This is the video of the song "Nautilus", from their debut CD, songs from upcoming album can be streamed here.Nancy Chow

Weapons For War

Posted on:

If you are going to be a highly confident band that does not hold a very high regard for media support you have to be able to deliver and do it in a big way. On their latest digital single, "Weapons for War", A Lull gives the world a sample of they can expect on the band’s forthcoming full-length debut Confetti. This album will be the follow-up to their 2009 ep Ice Cream Bones. Weapons For War is a force, and a track you really need to hear. I fully wanted to dislike this track but it has won me over and I am now looking forward to Confetti. The track has this tribal feel that really pulls you in, and this massive building energy that they utilize perfectly.

A Lull will be performing at Subt on June 13th, and "Weapons for War" b/w "Spread It All Around" can be purchased at all digital outlets.
