[Renmimbi at Bushwick Music Studio]

Bushwick Music Studios is one of the neighborhood’s most active DIY spaces, boasting some of the best local bands and performers and featuring top-notch sound. The space has the atmosphere of a fun loft party, the equipment of a professional venue, and can be credited with truly helping to foster the music community in the vibrant East Williamsburg/Bushwick area. Run by Tito Fleetwood Ladd, BMS is also a resource for independent engineers looking for a large tracking space, or for those in need of a rehearsal and performance space. It also serves as a lighting, sound and video sales and rental facility. Check the BMS Facebook page for upcoming shows after the DIY fest—there’s always something mind-blowing going on.

Reckless Sons, The Auctioneers, Wyldelife live at The Studio, 03.25

Posted on:

After jet setting in and out of New York for writing and recording sessions, Reckless Sons have re-surfaced on the live scene with new material and a replenished swagger. Branded by Matt Butler’s distinctively gritty vocals and incandescent lyrics, that are complemented by unhinged guitars and a stomping rhythm section, Reckless Sons will rile up The Studio at Webster Hall on March 25, with their unbridled energy, rebellious attitude, rousing stage presence, and some surprises. These New York rockers have teamed up with fellow scenesters, The Auctioneers, Wyldelife, The Shooting Gallery, and Flight from LA for a highly anticipated show. Presented by renowned menswear designer, John Varvatos, who recently dressed Reckless Sons for a full-page ad in SPIN Magazine, this “NYC Line-Up" is guaranteed to be one of the better looking and better sounding events happening around town. The show is 19+, and doors open at 6:30 P.M. www.recklesssons.com -Meijin Bruttomesso

Dangerous: 5-18

Posted on:

Did you know that Rhymefest is releasing a sophomore album called El Che? If you thought that Kid Sister’s album was long awaited then you haven’t been paying attention to Rhymefest. El Che will finally be released on May 18th, but to hold you over a little longer he is releasing a new mixtape on April 1st. The mixtape will be called Dangerous: 5-18. The first track to leak from the mixtape just happens to feature John Mayer. What, you thought this was a Wale track? Here is what Fest has to say about that. "This song ("Letter") was recorded for the El Che album while I was still on Allido Records with live vocals from John Mayer. If the fans really dig the record, I will release a follow-up statement addressing the Wale situation (how he came about recording his version of "Letter") in the immediate future."

Best of LA #19: Happy Hollows to Play the Troubadour May 13th

Posted on:

A band equipped with ineffable talent is usually enough to get people to listen.   Happy Hollows has talent, that much is true.  However, this group of three has more to offer.  These people are funny.  Really funny!  Their blog is littered with videos, many of which chronicle dynamic front woman Sarah Negahdari’s many alter egos.  If this band were a high school student, they would be the really, really good looking girl who you would like to hate, but can’t.  Ya, she might be really hot, but she can also crack a mean joke (and who hates jokes?).  Do yourself a favor and become a fan.  You’ll be glad you did.

An American Chinese Does Delivery to JB’s March 24

Posted on:

Somewhere between 1990s Modest Mouse and Against Me!, Philly natives An American Chinese have a knack for crafting acoustic based tracks meshed with clever quips and snare. A quick listen to their EP, Panic Pilgrim, leaves listeners smitten with their hodgepodge mix of folk and indie-pop. The raspy beat of “No Not Like That” is easily danceable, laced with classic rock construction, bringing to mind Asthmatic Kitty’s Starlight Mints. “Blaine Wiggins Failed Magician” is swimmingly swoon-worthy, adding strings alongside cymbals and nearly whispered vocals. An American Chinese’s songs are daring but discernibly thought out, making “Metropolitan” and “Jersey Claw” experimental but enjoyable. With a sound evocative of their creative independence, An American Chinese defies convention while having fun, which is always admirable. I just wish they’d release their latest album Utopian Tree already. It should definitely be a fun evening with Cheers Elephant and The Bee Team also on the bill. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Meg Baird Graces the First Unitarian Chapel March 24

Posted on:

When she isn’t a part of the brilliance that is Espers or dishing out Appalachian style ditties with The Baird Sisters, songstress Meg Baird breathes life into her own acoustic ballads. As part of a band with her sister Laura, she’s been involved with the local scene for going on nine years now following in the footsteps of her great-great uncle, I.G. Greer. Now on her recent debut solo release, Dear Companion, she continues in the tradition on her own with melodic guitar strumming and soothing angelic vocals. When you hear her play at the center of the First Unitarian Chapel tonight, you’re sure to be filled with enchantment. It’s DIY Bushwick Fest time! 9 DIY venues, a million NYC bands!

Posted on:

Bushwick Music Studios in association with Deli Magazine and Arts In Bushwick are proud to announce the official schedule for DIY Bushwick, A Musical Festival, taking place March 24-27, in nine venues throughout Bushwick. The inaugural festival will feature Brooklyn-based bands, DJs, and artists performing in alternative Do-It-Yourself spaces just a walk or a bike ride apart. Admission prices range from free to $10 with an average ticket price of $5. Festival passes will be available online for $20, with Friday/Saturday passes available for $10. This is part of an effort by festival organizers to make sure that the events are accessible to all.

Tito Fleetwood Ladd, owner of Bushwick Music Studios (one of the venues involved), decided to organize the festival in an attempt to galvanize the neighborhood’s flourishing music and arts scene. In the last few years, Bushwick has emerged as a frontier for DIY venues, attracting artists and musicians with the limitless opportunities provided by these raw spaces (check out a Deli article about this here). Although the scene has been growing for some time, a Bushwick-centered festival of this scale has never been attempted.

Ladd’s vision was that by working together, the Bushwick music scene would ultimately receive more visibility. “There’s this incredible energy and all these cool spaces with amazing talent in Bushwick,” says Ladd, “This is our way of showing that to anyone who wants to pay attention to us. We’re all doing it together.” When he reached out to several venues and organizations in Bushwick, he immediately received enthusiastic support.

Deli Magazine and Arts In Bushwick have both signed on to help coordinate and produce the event. Bushwick Music Studios will be joined by nine spaces including Party Expo, Don Pedros, Goodbye Blue Monday, Brooklyn Fireproof, Castle Braid, The Opera House Lofts, House of Yes, Eastern District, and Northeast Kingdom. Corporate sponsors are nowhere to be found. DIY Bushwick is pure grassroots.

The Deli will cover this event in depth, so stay tuned!

Via Audio release new CD + play Le Poisson Rouge on 04.17

Posted on:

Via Audio‘s new CD Animalore – released in early March – gives us a fresh new sound, inspired to the glorious Motown years, but also reminiscent of some of the more elegant pop of the early 90s’ – for example, we hear some Prefab Sprout influences in the bands’ sophisticated jazzy melodies and arrangements. Jazz as a matter of fact seems to be the main new ingredient, bringing the band’s sound closer to orchestral pop artists like Claire and The Reason and My Brightest Diamond, with whom they also share high production values on record. Unlike these artists though, the upbeat pop element is still Via Audio’s trademark – check out the dancey track "Babies" (streaming under this review) and other tunes on their Myspace page. Currently on tour, the Brooklyn quartet will be back live in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge on 04.17 – a venue particularly appropriate for their new sound.

From the Open Blog: Monarchs – Soulful Roots-Rock

Posted on:

Merely three years after writing her first song, Celeste Griffin founded Monarchs in both Birmingham, Alabama and Austin, Texas, catching the attention of the “Music Capital of the World” by independently releasing two EPs and playing regular gigs at Emo’s, Cactus Cafe, and Mohawk. Celeste has developed the music emergent in her and cultivated her own unique brand of intimate songwriting. Her rugged, feminine lyrics combined with her smoky vocals make for dreamy yet anthemic music. Monarchs’ EPs, “The Oak EP” and “Those Words, Those Frames,” are the sonic equivalent of a summer evening on a back porch. Griffin takes these moments wherever she goes, ultimately keeping every thread in Monarchs intimate. Monarchs’ identity is ultimately that of family, and Celeste collaborates with musicians in both Birmingham and Austin to find creative catalysts, such as artist Van Hollingsworth, and develop her craft organically. Currently, Monarchs’ Austin assemblage features musicians Alex Tomaino (guitar), Josh Halpern (drums), and Phil Ajjarpu (bass). This summer, Monarchs will record their first full length LP with producer Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Heartless Bastards) and plan to tour the U.S. extensively in the fall.

(this post taken from Monarchs’ post on our DIY Open Blog, check out other Open Blog posts in the Deli Kitchen. As for Monarchs – check them out at Stubb’s on April 8th)

J.A.C.K. + Gay Blades + My Other Friends at Bowery Electric 03.26

Posted on:

The Gay Blades and J.A.C.K. are two of the indie bands with the most fun show in town – and as the town we are talking about is indie band capital NYC, this might even be one of the most fun shows you’ll ever see! Uhm, yeah, maybe we are parital to these guys because they played our Deli Parties several times and rocked da house. Jack is a weird beast of a band flirting with indie, blues, noise rock and metal, tied together by an insanely intense frontman. The Gay Blades play another weird mix of rock’n’roll, indie and pop that sometimes purposedly (and gayfully) enters cheesy territory – this is one of those bands that you MUST see live, as their recordings really don’t give the right idea of what the live experience is going to be. On the bill also slightly mellower indie pop group My Other Friends. Bowery Electric on March 26 – Do not miss!

The Deli SF’s Weekend Highlights For 3/25-3/28

Posted on:

While many of you may be out of town this week for SXSW, or perhaps on some other well deserved spring vacation, for those still around there are a few good shows this coming weekend that should be worth your attention.

On Thursday the 25th Epic Sauce will be putting on it’s second show in it’s new series at Milk. Starting around 8pm several groups (including Neon Indian – headlining with a DJ set) will put on what is promised to be an epic dance party. Though Boyz IV Men and Sweat Wet (who apparently are anti-myspace) are the only local representation, this show is certainly worth a mention as those sauce-y folks over there are really trying to get something interesting started with this series.

You’re a damn fool if Hemlock isn’t your destination on Friday for Spencey Dude and the Doodles. They will be playing with The Aerosols and The Coathangers, and with a line up like that this will surely be an exciting and rocking show, 9:30pm.

Of course if down-tempo is your flavor for the weekend then there is something just for your pallet. Head up to Kimo’s Saturday night for 7 Orange ABC who will be sharing a bill with Meta, 9pm.

Lastly on Sunday, the Rickshaw will be hosting the Young Prisms with a roster of other out of town bands including Pictureplane, Small Black, and Washed Out. Young Prisms are fresh back from a tour and definitely worth seeing. From the Rickshaw site it looks like the show may be sold out, but if you can scuttle yourself a ticket you won’t be disappointed.

Looks to be a good weekend shaping up. Hope you can make it out for some of these events, or if not then to the many others that are also going on in the next few days.
