Pissed Jeans Get Pissed at The Khyber Feb. 19

Posted on:

Sup Pop superstars Pissed Jeans have certainly received many accolades for their newest album King of Jeans. And if you caught them at shows like their album release party at Pi Lam, then you know that their sound, which has already stayed truest to the grunge filled days of Sub Pop old, has evolved to a whole other level of brash and heavy punk. The band is set to venture on a spring tour starting in April. But before their journeys, they’re ready to crank up the instruments for another round of in your face aggression at The Khyber tonight. WPO’s Balkan Dance Party Takes Over JB’s Feb. 19

Posted on:

West Philadelphia Orchestra is a very strange and intriguing mix between an actual orchestra and a gypsy folk band. There is definitely a middle-eastern vibe around the music as well. The mix of strings, horns, and percussion is well composed, and highly thought out. It is very dynamic, rising and falling, never going in quite one direction or the other. For such a large group, all of the instruments are surprisingly in perfect synchronicity and harmony with each other, working together to provide full, precise songs. It also seems that every instrument, and there are many, has its time to shine, so this also demonstrates a tremendous group effort. There is something to be said about their live show in particular, though. This group of wonderfully talented musicians plays off of each other with ease, and has a huge amount of energy in every show. It appears to be a dancing, shouting, and clapping extravaganza for the audience, as full crowd participation is encouraged. Don’t miss a chance to be part of the show tonight at Johnny Brenda’s as West Philadelphia Orchestra joins Slavic Soul Party for a “clash of the avant brass bands”. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Fever Dreams

Posted on:

This April, JT and The Clouds will be releasing their latest album entitled Caledonia. This week they leaked the albums first single called “Fever Dreams”. The track is heavily influenced by classic rhythm and blues with elements of upbeat modern gospel. It’s an exciting mixture of horns and organs and soulful melodies.

Villanelles and Ghost Weapons Tonight @ Radio Bean 11pm

Posted on:

Burlington veterans, The Villanelles, along with promising new comers Ghost Weapons will be headlining the late shift at Radio Bean tonight at 11pm. Ghost Weapons have decided to unconditionally bring the huge classic alt rock sound (Dinosaur Jr., Husker Du) to Burlington. The single song available on their otherwise deserted myspace page speaks for itself. Tonight will be their debut and hopefully we’ll be welcoming some promising new sounds to the area.

SuperGoose Bringin’ the Nasty to the M Room Feb. 18

Posted on:

When attempting to describe a band, it’s always easy to simply start at their name and give some indication as to whether the name relates to the overall sound. A name like SuperGoose poses somewhat of a challenge, but after thinking long and hard, it’s decidedly pretty spot on for a band that takes two different mindsets and melds them into something hard-hitting, but still unabashedly fun. Giving old-school rock riffs an electro facelift, SuperGoose is a bubbling pot of bassy, fuzzed-out chords, menacing drones, and squelching keys, all anchored by propulsive beats. Catch them tonight with Hair Rocket, Nude Beach and Lookbook. M Room, 15 W. Girard Ave, 9 pm, $8, 21+ myspace.com/supergoosebandJoe Poteracki

Hello, Small Chicago

Posted on:

An exciting new website launched this month called Small Chicago. The concept is to recorded mostly local bands performing live. The site films three songs with two cameras and captures it all on the first take. The first band they are featuring is Coltrane Motion. The band performed the above track “Year Without a Summer” as well as “Ex-girlfriend in a Coma” and “Can’t”. It looks like it will be a great series and a big boost to Chicago music.

You can catch Coltrane Motion live on March 25th at Double Door.

The Armchairs Keepin’ It Simple at Danger Danger Gallery Feb. 18

Posted on:

Simplicity is what makes The Armchairs an incredible band. It is the fact that they can use so few instruments and still get such an enormous sound that makes them altogether more interesting than most of their type. These four men provide listeners with their own take on the ever-popular psychedelic pop that has swept through Philadelphia’s music scene. This twist on an old classic includes, but is not limited to, authentic 60’s style vocals, herein meaning that there are multiple voices, airy and well balanced, plus minimalistic organ and guitars that blend together for a beautiful harmony. Songs are short and sweet, and never linger too long on certain parts making for a fast-paced and upbeat experience. Most notable amongst there repetoire are the songs “Nebraska” and “Little Sammy Ghetz,” the former focusing more on those shimmering vocals that give the band a Zombies vibe, and the latter doing quite the opposite and featuring a very tight-knit instrumental, jammy bridge. Tonight at Danger Danger Gallery is your chance to see what is likely to be a very energetic performance that incorporates all of the above. From our Open Blog: Warm Ones

Posted on:

Warm Ones is the brevity that speaks in perfect harmony. Equal parts after-school special, adult film and Polish- style buffet, the Chicago four-piece specializes in aggressively catchy indie rock songs that range from bubble gum pop, found on such tracks as “Small Spies” and “Love For A Week” – to noisy garage riffs like “Bacteriostatic”. The band is as experimental as it is grounded in simplicity and the result has been strong songs, dynamic recordings and memorable melodies. On Jan 21st, 2010, Warm Ones released their debut full length album "Sprezzatura" to a packed house at the Hideout in Chicago. In the two weeks since it’s release, the album has already received positive reviews from Tribune writer Matt Pais in Metromix and the Redeye, and received airplay on 93XRT courtesy of Richard Milne, who described the Warm Ones record as one of his favorite releases of the year so far.

Is The Dig the next big NYC thing? Live with The Editors, Terminal 5, 02.19

Posted on:

The Dig is a band with enormous potential. They write good, catchy indie-pop songs with Beatles references (but punchier). They are excellent young performers and (as far as an Italian dude like me can tell) pretty cute guys – bah, let’s just say that some girls will find them attractive… The band will open for The Editors on 02.19 at Terminal 5 and tour the US with the same British band and then with Portugal The Man in the following weeks. They were The Deli’s Artist of the Month some time in 2008, they played one of our showcases just about one year ago, AND they also placed 14th in our Best of NYC 2009 Poll for emerging bands – which triggers a well deserved "WE TOLD YOU THEY’RE GOOD, WHY DIDN’T YOU BELIEVE US?!?". So… we really hope that the release of their new CD "Electric Toys" on April 27 will mark the beginning of this band’s rise to stardom.

London Souls bring Rock’n’Roll to Gramercy Theater on 02.25

Posted on:

Just a few weeks before London Souls‘ show at Gramercy Theatre (on 02.25), the band unveiled their first official music video for “The Sound,” the epically resonant closing track of their yet-to-be-titled debut LP. Directed by Creative Control, comprised of duo Coodie and Chike (Mos Def, Pitbull, Kanye West), and Damon Dash, footage was filmed December 2009 in the Tribeca basement of DD172 – better known as the now-defunct DIY venue Under 100. (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
