Cheers Elephant Ready to Start a Riot at Blockley Pourhouse Feb. 5

Posted on:

Cheers Elephant are hard at work on the brand new album, and are getting ready to unveil some new tracks. But before they do both, the dynamic local psych-folk rockers are getting ready to play Blockley Pourhouse during what might just be the nicest lineup to grace the new venue. They’ll be joined by Oso, whose last album The Bellringer was one of my favorite releases of last year. This will be the bands first big outing before they headline Thursday’s portion of the Northern Liberties Winter Music Festival. Rounding out the already well-rounded lineup is Filmstar, a band whose leaping and plunging melodies, incisive lyrics, and unabashed pop hooks should rouse up the crowd. Blockley Porhouse, 3801 Chestnut St., 9pm, $5, 21+ myspace.com/cheerselephant (Tyler Westnedge) – Bill McThrill

The Asteroid #4 Lands Down at JB’s Feb. 5

Posted on:

Cosmic crusaders The Asteroid #4 are making their return to Johnny Brenda’s tonight. Since the mid-90’s these ‘genteel woodsmen’ have been making fuzzed out space jams the likes of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Lillys and 60’s pop ancestors. They mix a cocktail of shimmering harmonies, breezy, churning guitars, pounding drums and haunting atmosphere that manages to pay homage to their many influences while still maintaining a sound all their own. The band’s last released was These Flowers of Ours: A Treasury of Witchcraft & Devilry in 2008, but a new album is expected for this year. One-time cacophonous 4-track project turned full band The Sounds of Kaleidoscope and former-Extraordinaire and Punk Rock Payroll’s Lux Perpetua will be joining them on this journey. Andrew Lipke’s Prospects Look Good at North Star Bar Feb. 5

Posted on:

Whether it’s through original acts like Franzschubert & The Schuubs, cover bands like Get The Led Out, or through his own material, Andrew Lipke has always managed to be a strong presence in the local music community. But through the work he’s recorded on Mad Dragon Records, he has really started to come into his own as a solo artist, and Motherpearl & Dynamiteis easily his most dynamic release to date. Tonight at The North Star Bar he takes it one step further by emerging onto the scene with a strong backing band in The Prospect. Expect this one to be filled with plenty of alt-folk compositions that mirror everything from Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd to John Denver. North Star Bar. 2639 Poplar St., 9pm, $8, 21+ myspace.com/andrewlipkeBill McThrill

Peeps who like to scream: The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!

Posted on:

The exclamation point at the end of "The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!" is there for a reason: the band (recently signed by David Byrne’s Luaka Bop) produces songs fueled with excitement, and choruses that sound like dance-inducing war cries. The song Snowday in particular screams "fun, fun, FUN!" with its fast-fluttering keyboard parts and youthful acclamations of playing in white wintry powder. This song (along with nine others) is part of the band’s upcoming LP bearing the concise and poignant title: “I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU AND I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU! HAVE AN AWESOME DAY! HAVE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE!!” – which could have also simply been called "WE ALL LOVE TO SCREAM!!! AND TO USE EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!. Expect the members of the band to refer to the finer things in life, like cute girls. In the meantime, The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! will tour and fly its way around the US starting at the end of February. – Abigail Devora

Hurricane Bells release video + tour… India???

Posted on:

Hurricane Bells is a new project from Steve Schiltz, singer and guitarist of Longwave for nearly ten years. After touring the better part of last year around Longwave’s fourth album Secrets Are Sinister, Schiltz set up shop to create a new project with little else than his MacBook and an Mbox. He wrote, played, recorded and mixed every note himself, arranging what would become Tonight Is The Ghost. Some songs were fully crafted within the past 18 months, while others are newly architected from pieces written throughout his years as a songwriter. Vagrant Records released Tonight Is The Ghost digitally on November 10, 2009. Today the band premiered this new video for their song "Monsters". Currently Hurricane Bells is across the globe finishing a two-week tour in India.

Live Review: The Picture + Tab the Band, Deadbeat Darling and Black Taxi

Posted on:

On January 28, 2010, Black Taxi and Deadbeat Darling (in the picture) sold out the Bowery Ballroom for their second time in eight months, collaborating with TAB the Band, who celebrated their release of “Zoo Noises,” and The Picture, who performed for their final time. Half brothers, all rock ‘n roll, TAB the Band treated the audience to a dozen playful, gritty tunes, including their latest single “She Said No (I Love You).” A photo montage of The Picture, illuminating the venue, set the stage for their delicate, angst-ridden, nostalgic sound. Overwrought with anticipation, the crowd welcomed Black Taxi with non-stop dancing to favorites from “Things of That Nature” and new songs that showcased the band’s consistently masterful songwriting. Frontman Ezra Huleatt’s glockenspiel, decorated with parasol and faux plants, met its demise during a zealous on-stage smashing. Dapper and dynamic, Deadbeat Darling dove into “Weight of Wandering” and unreleased tracks, closing the evening with swirling lights and a “picture perfect” performance. -Meijin Bruttomesso

Let’s Talk About That Dossier, Shearwater

Posted on:

First of all, we never get to use the word ‘dossier’ enough, and in this case, it’s actually news-related: in addition to dropping The Golden Archipelago on 2/23 (out digitally one week earlier), the boys and girls of Shearwater are also unveiling "a limited edition, full-color, 75-page, 8 x 10.5” "Dossier" companion piece to The Golden Archipelago" called, of course, The Golden Dossier. You can check it out at Kickstarter.com. Seventy-five pages! Get comfy. You can also grab the "Black Eyes" track right now from Matador here. There’s a conspicuous SXSW-shaped hole in their touring schedule, but Jonathan Meiburg (member) is slated for Red 7 on March 13th, in support of Xiu Xiu. Now peruse your dossier.

Young Man is fantastic project by 20-year-old Chicago based songwriter, Colin Caulfield. With a sound reminiscent to Panda Bear or Deerhunter, Colin seems to keep things simple, yet with the addition of some exceptional layers, giving him some major promise for 2010. A debut "concept" album, Boy, is planned for a spring/summer release. Here’s a lovely demo called, "Just A Growin’," however head on over to his YouTube page to watch some great clips/covers and to grab some mp3s. – Brendan Losch
