New England

Thanks to our Jurors and Staff!

Burlington, Boston, Providence, Portland and the rest of New England wouldn’t be known for its stellar, incomparable music scene if it wasn’t for the men and women behind the curtains. They are sound engineers, promoters, tour managers, journalists and people who work in our beloved clubs. I thank them for their hard work and their willingness to participate in Deli – New England’s first yearly poll.

Those Darlins are the Deli’s Best Nashville Band of 2009

Posted on:

Those Darlins might be remembered one day as the band that reinvented rock’n’roll by replacing the blues element with the garage one – could this sort of genetic mutation have happened in any other place than Nashville, in any other time than the new millennium? The band’s musical recipe is as simple as it’s effective, and the results are infectiously charming. Congrats to them for winning The Deli’s Best of 2009 Poll (full results here), mostly thanks to the vote from our jury, that gave one a 1 point edge over electronic indie poppers The Non Commissioned Officers – a band with an ever growing line up.

Third place for theatrical epic video game celebrators The Protomen, who also won our Best of 2009 Fans’ Poll (full results here)

Let’s Do the Timewarp at JB’s Jan. 22

Posted on:

Start making plans because this weekend TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb will be letting loose their twisted concoction of blues, Bob Dylan and whiskey on our inebriated eardrums. Caught somewhere between rickety small town saloon and laying on your couch hungover the next day, Kong and the Bomb bring together everything we love and hate about drunken nights spent drifting between the barroom floor and your bedroom pillow. They’ll be joined on this alcohol-soaked evening by The Great Unknown, who won’t remain that way for long. Their lyrics are wound so tightly around soulful guitar melodies that bring up images of oh so familiar settings and experiences. This fearsome foursome who began as a duo in a quiet, dark basement have emerged to the surface and are ready to show what they have to offer. Looks like they’ll be pulling double duty this weekend at The Spinning Leaves‘ Vinyl Release Party! Capping off the bill will be the strange and wildly entertaining army of Toy Soldiers. All three of these bands are unique, different and ready to rock your winter socks right off your chilly feet. So get your skinny jean wearing asses out to Johnny Brenda’s tonight for a show that will timewarp you to a rollicking partay! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+Meaghan McCafferty

Beautiful new video by Paul and the Patients – Live at Union Hall on 02.03

Posted on:

Please update your Flash Player

Gravity is a rare quality in rock music nowadays – the gravity you find in those intense songs from the 60s and 70s, from the Doors to John Lennon, from David Bowie to Syd Barret. Brooklyn’s Paul and the Patients own that trait, not only in their songwriting, but also in their looks – and we dig it. This new video develops a simple idea in a gorgeous way, and definitely enhances the intensity of the song (called "Complaint 15), that really sounds like a classic to our ears.

STEREO IS A LIE FTW!

Posted on:

The results of our byzantine Year End Poll are finally in, with the all-caps by nature STEREO IS A LIE scoring a rare double win: after coming out on top of the readers’ poll, they combined those points with votes from our expert jury and from our own Deli Austin writers to emerge victorious overall. And so…your emerging artist of 2009: STEREO IS A LIE. Missions took second and Neon Indian and Black Joe Lewis ended up in a deadlock for third.

The champs play Beauty Bar tonight (along with Buttercup, Ideal Soul Mart and Bear Bones). Missions is at the Mohawk one week from today – Jan. 29th – and Neon Indian is out at Hailey’s in Denton on the 30th. Full poll results below…

The Vandelles release new CD in the UK + play Mercury

Posted on:

The Vandelles (who placed 22nd on our Best of NYC 2009 Poll) have just release a new self titled EP in the UK under SVC Records. The band’s sound (quite literally) reverberates with British noise pop influences reminiscent of Jesus and Mary Chain with an added blues, surf and… vampire edge ("vampire"? Is that a new genre? – we hear you ask. Yeah maybe… you know when the vocals sound like they are coming from… hell or something?). Don’t miss them tonight (01.22) opening for Serena Maneesh at Mercury Lounge.

NYC Artists on the Rise: Shayna Zaid & The Catch live at Rockwood

Posted on:

We stubmled upon Shayna Zaid & The Catch last night at Southpaw and were charmed by their sunny and well performed rootsy pop. I guess we weren’t the only ones to be charmed considering that as of late the band signed not one but 7 tv Licenses and 2 ABC Family films. They are also doing an in studio perfromance next week on Break Thru Radio and Sirius. The band has a busy schedule ahead with a series of shows booked – including several performances at SXSW and a showcase tonight (01.22) at Rockwood Music Hall in the LES. Check them out!

Janus on Headbangers Ball

Posted on:

2009 was a tremendous year for rockers Janus, but they are already promising this year will be even better. They are starting it by hosting MTV2’s Headbangers Ball this Monday (1/25) at 2am. That’s right there is still such a thing as Headbangers Ball, and Janus is honored. This marks the start of their tour with Chevelle that will bring them back to Chicago on Feb. 20th to play the Riv.

It’s not surprising they are touring again they’ve been touring non-stop to promote their debut album, Red Right Return, since its release September 22, 2009 on REALID Records, through Warner Music Group’s Independent Label Group. The album’s explosive first single, “Eyesore,” is currently spinning on over 50 Rock radio stations nationwide, and is at#17 on the Active Rock charts.

You can catch a special acoustic show from Janus tomorrow (1/23) at Best Buy (1432 Butterfield Rd) at 2pm, and them see them perform at Cubby Bear.

Explode Into Colors Voted the Deli Portland’s Best Emerging Band of 2009: Part Deux!!

Posted on:

As evidenced by the composite points chart blogged just below this post, the voters of Portland have spoken, Facebooked, MySpaced, Tweeted, cold-called and badgered the general populace to come right and announce that, yes, Explode Into Colors was Portland’s Best Emerging Band of 2009! Major huge congratulations go out to the all-girl, lo-fi, found-sound dance trio for their trailblazing 2009, and for making our ears tilt just a little more than usual this year.

Thanks, again, to everyone who voted on the Readers Poll, the Open Poll, and also to our amazing list of Jurors. The Deli Portland’s stellar list of Jurors consisted of some amazing local bloggers, writers, and music people, and we couldn’t have come to such a wide cross-section of bands without their valid input. Here they are, in no particular order:

DJ Gustav: DJ for 94.7 FM Alternative Portland;

Nick Mattos: Celebrated queer columnist, and arts writer for Portland’s Just Out newspaper;

Chris Young: Contributor to the Deli Portland, Associate Editor and DJ/Electro Editor of Oregon Music News;

Michael Miller: Contributor to the Deli Portland;

Katrina Nattress: Assistant Editor for the Deli Portland, Music Editor of Button Magazine, and contributor to Willamette Week newspaper;

Ryan J. Prado: Associate Editor of the Deli Portland, staff writer for Just Out newspaper, contributor for Synthesis, Wonka Vision, and Alternative Press;

Mark Lore: Editor/founder of The Days of Lore music blog, contributor to Spin.com, Chico News and Review, and The Portland Mercury;

Joel Sommer: Contributor to the Deli Portland

And let’s not forget the runners-up in the Best Emerging Band of 2009 poll: Nurses, and Deli Portland Readers Poll winner Bodhi! We can’t say enough great things about these bands, but we’ll try as soon as we catch our breath.

Stick around for our regular monthly Band of the Month polls, beginning February 1st. And keep reading The Deli Portland!
