Open Contest Results: Monahans

Hey fellow Austinians,

We apologize for being a little slow lately with all things related to our Best of Nashville 2009 poll for emerging indie artists. Our NYC Readers’ Poll (which we recommend you to check out here) has brought an unexpected amount of traffic to our site, which has caused our server to crash several times yesterday, making us waste a lot of time. Because of this we decided to postpone slightly the beginning of some of the other cities’ readers’ polls, Austin included.

Anyhoo… we just finished collecting the nominations from our knowledgeable and attractive panel of jurors and we are now ready to hit you all with an impressive list of awesome local, emerging and 100% independent artists. If you’d like to learn more about our voting process, please check out the rules here

While we are organizing the list of nominees for the readers’ poll, we wanted to announce the winners of our Open Contest. For those unaware, this Contest is the part of our Best of Austin Poll that nominates artists through an open submission system – while the majority of our finalists are freely selected by a jury of local bloggers, promoters and scenemakers. We’d like to thank all the artists who participated in our Open Contest, the ones who submitted directly, and the ones who qualified throughout 2009 by winning our monthly polls.

Choosing the winners was not an easy decision to make for The Deli writers, which is a testament to our amazing music scene. We are happy to announce that the following artists qualified for the next phase of the poll:

Monahans: 9

Authors: 8

Drew Smith: 7.5

The Eastern Sea: 7.5

Special congratulations to Monahans (in the picture) who were the overall winners of our Open Contest!

The Austin Best of 2009 Readers’ Poll will start soon, keep an eye out for it on the right column under all those logos!

Residency Alert: Rival Sons at Cinespace every Sunday in January

Posted on:

It’s hard to say whether classic rock revivalists Rival Sons can hold a candle next to obvious heroes like, say, any ginormous British rock act between 1965 and 1978, but the execution might be worth checking out. Scour their MySpace page and a monster of new classic rock will come pleasantly crashing in, crappy speakers or not. Rival Sons hold Sunday nights at Cinespace all this month — the cost is free and, yes, there will be loads of free vodka swimming around.

Cold War Kids on CurrentTV’s Embedded Tonight

Cold War Kids | CurrentTV’s Embedded Tonight

While we fully understand Cold War Kids have far surpassed a long gone underground status–especially the kind that merits some mention on our beloved site–it’s their faithfulness to the DYI spirit that keeps us listening. KROQ or not, they exploded without the typical transformation that goes hand-in-hand with lost dignity. Watch as the lead-singer-loses-voice-before-show drama unfolds tonight on CurrentTV at 11 p.m. [via LosAnjealous]

Free Week Continues…Look After Your Scorpion Child

Posted on:

The very very Austin phenomenon that is Free Week is in full swing, and the cornucopia of live music to be heard at Agent Zero prices includes – and we’re just talking about Wednesday night here – Scorpion Child at the Mohawk, Midgetmen & The Gary at Red 7, Mobley at Club Deville, Wine & Revolution and Hollywood Gossip at The Parish, Strange Attractors and New Roman TImes at Beauty Bar, and Brothers & Sisters, The Laughing, and Oh No Oh My at Emo’s.

That list is by no means comprehensive. Those are just samples – there’s a handful of up & comers at every Free Week venue. If you spent 2009 thinking about seeing more live music in 2010, spend 2010 seeing more live music, and thinking about spending more time on your couch. Just to mix things up.

Posted on:

Boy Genius will release a new version of their single "Blame Love" (featured in the upcoming new album "Staggering") on January 26, 2010, via Greenpop Recordings – you can preview it here. Brooklyn Vegan said about their music: "Boy Genius are definitely within the indiepop realm but not too sugary, not too precious, relying on well-crafted melodies and gentle, mostly-acoustic instrumentation to carry the songs…Boy Genius deserve more attention than they’ve gotten, hopefully that will come soon." Boy Genius also announced dates for a Eest Coast tour mostly happening between the end of January and the Beginning of February. You can catch them live at Fort Useless in Brooklyn on 01.09.

Lobisomem

Chicago’s Tall Corn Music is releasing the latest effort from Brad Loving (aka Lobisomen) this February. As Lobisomen, Brad is free to explore the depths of electronic music. Combining influences as diverse African, South American, and Jamaican music with elements for hip hop and jazz, his new ep Brightest Solids is near global effort. It’s not surprising given his extended stays in Brazil, France, Japan, and Mali. However, when you listen closely you can hear heavy elements of thriving local improvisational music scene. Tall Corn is giving us a sneak peak at the ep which is scheduled for release on Feb. 23. Here is “Plasma Is For Lovers” (mp3).

Warpaint debut video for “Elephants,” begin tour with Natural HIstory Museum set

Warpaint | "Elephants" [via FADER]
Dir. by Bruce Muller

Strangely enough, this video plays more like a dim preview inside the souls of one of our favorite ambient outfits. It’s all sorts of intriguing, from the director’s manipulation of time to the group’s apparent desire to stay hidden behind their freshened up exteriors. Mission accomplished in the enigmatic department, Warpaint. Mission accomplished.

Warpaint play The Natural History Museum on Feb. 5 with Yesayer.

Local Natives top off 2009 with holiday surprises and au revoirs to Europe

Courtney Coles

Local Natives played a sorta-farewell set to a sold out crowd at the Echo just before Christmas Day, sharing their bill with Chief and Voxhaul Broadcast as openers. It would be Local Natives’ final home show until they return to Europe in March. Their debut album, Gorilla Manor (nickname of their home/rehearsal spot/party dungeon) was released November 2 in the UK (Infectious Records) and won’t be available in these states until February 16 (Frenchkiss Records). The band had a few copies available for purchase along with a Christmas gift to the sold out crowd: a poster bill specially made for this night’s event. Show closer "Sun Hands" ended in true Local Natives fashion: by inviting the bands they’ve toured with on stage including Johnny Wilson (The Union Line) and Stewart Cole (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes). -Courtney Coles

Love Song For Buddy

Posted on:

Seeing Daytrotter post their new session with Headlights today reminded me that I had not shared their video for “Love Song For Buddy”. This animated gem was directed and Illustrated by Scott Marvel, and beautifully captures this gentle effort from the normally upbeat Southern Illinois band. The song appears on the band’s second album, Wildlife, which was released by Polyvinyl back in October. Headlights also announced tonight their spring tour with David Bazan that will bring them to DeKalb’s House Café on April 3rd.
